“Angel, what did you do?” John comes running out of the house and immediately to my side, his hand settling on my back. Usually, when he touches me, a part of me eases. Not this time, though. Now I am full of rage, and the Angel standing in front of me is my target. Just as I go to drop to the floor, he disappears.

“Asshole,” I swear. “We need a portal,” I tell John. “We need to find a portal.”

“For what?” he questions.

“Viper sent Talia through one. How do I call Death? How does she do it?” I dig my hands into my hair and start pulling at it. John gently untangles my fingers from the knotted locks.

“Calm down, and let’s think.”

“Think? Think?” I throw my head back and laugh. “My sister was sent through a portal! I told her not to go see him. I knew Viper was a snake, and I was proven right.”

“You are always right, my love.” I swing my head around to him and see Melvon approaching, drawn by my raging emotions. We are still connected. I agreed to let him go, but he wants to serve me. So I disabled some of our connection, but he still feels my anger and pain. Tanya follows close behind him, and that’s when I see her lips are pink, as if she has been kissing someone. When I glance back at Melvon, he looks away with guilt etched all over his face.

“Tanya,” I say, my voice low, but she knows.

Her eyes skirt to Melvon.

“I told her not to kiss me, but she insisted,” Melvon says in a hurry.

Tanya strides up to him and slaps him across the face. Hard. He doesn’t even flinch, but I know it hurts her because she shakes out her hand.

“You kissed me back, vampire.”

“After you stuck your tongue down my throat,” he calmly says back to her. She goes to hit him again, but he grips her wrist, preventing her from doing so.

“It’s best you keep your hands to yourself, witch,” he bites back.

She pulls her hand free and turns to face me. “What’s going on?” Her arms cross over her chest.

She has grown up a little. But she is still the more timid and quiet of us all. I don’t like what is happening between her and Melvon, but I’m not going to get involved. That’s between them.

“Viper sent our sister through a portal,” I inform her. Her eyes go wide, and she looks at John, then back to me.

“What? How?”

I shrug. “Bronik informed me.”

“And what is he doing to get her back?” she asks.

“He left. I don’t think he’s doing anything.”

“Who else can create a portal?” Tanya asks.

“Only Viper. The queen could, too, but she’s dead.” I watch as her shoulders droop in disappointment. I feel it as well.

“What about Death? He wouldn’t let her die,” Tanya says, hopeful.

“I don’t even know if he can see that far. He is death to our world, but the other one? We know nothing but stories told to make us fear it.”

“Should we call him?” Tanya offers. “Talia calls him when she’s really angry at him.”

“And he doesn’t come,” I remind her.

“Apart from that one time.” We both stay silent for a moment. Then, in unison, we start screaming for him. Of course, nothing happens, and we both look like fools screaming at the night sky. When our voices grow hoarse, I glance over at Tanya.

“We could try to kill ourselves, but you know… not succeed.”

“Fucking hell. No,” John utters, shaking his head. Her idea isn’t all that bad. But it’s a risk we aren’t sure about. Would he even come, then?

“Halaba girls, you are mighty noisy.” Everyone swings their heads around to find Death, or Grim, as Talia calls him, standing behind us. “Your sister?” he asks, checking around.

“Not here,” Melvon answers.

“Where is she?” He focuses on me.

“She went through a portal,” I tell him.

He doesn’t look shocked, just worried. His brows crease together, and he pulls his lips in tightly.

“Can you get her back?” I ask him.

“No. Other worlds are not our responsibility. We have never been able to go to any others.”

“Will she survive? What do you know of it?”

“I know a lot of things, but only from those who have told me. I hear of a beautiful world where flowers blossom in all types of different colors. A world that is so physically remarkable, but also filled with great danger. What we know is that yorks possess the other world. One slipped through a portal once and took half our population many years ago. How the other world has managed to stay alive is beyond me. The only thing we Angels can think of is that they have someone very powerful protecting them.” He pauses, and his tone has me weary. “Do not call for me again.”
