“He won’t let you stay,” Tanya says without hesitation. “Least of all with her.” She nods her head in my direction.
“You may be right, but Talia is mine now. It’s done, and no one can break that bond.”
I look at him, a little bewildered.
What does that mean?
Is he merely saying that for the sake of saying it?
That’s not like him. What he says, he always means.
“You claimed her?” Tanya asks incredulously.
“Claimed me?” I ask, confused, I didn’t think his words rang true, I should have known better.
“Yes. Just as a wolf can claim their mate, the same can be done for Angels.”
“I’m not an Angel,” I remind him.
“Doesn’t matter. Your boyfriend is part Angel, and now you have a big fat warning sign on you to other Angels,” Tanya says before Max can answer.
“How did you learn this?” I ask, my brow furrowed.
“I read a lot when I was at the castle,” she replies in a small voice. “She kept me in there for weeks by myself.”
I don’t know what to say to that, so I turn back to Max. “You and I are going to talk.”
He only nods with a smirk attached to those beautifully sinful lips. One that I know I won’t care to argue with.
Chapter Sixteen
I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to call Lucifer.
Dad?
Father?
Devil?
Lucifer?
I think I may just stick to Lucifer to be safe.
He stands in front of me, again popping up unannounced, and checks around the small space. I’m currently lying in Max’s tent, just having woken up again with Max nowhere in sight.
I sit up, and his eyes zoom in on my neck when I do. My hands go to touch what I know he is looking at.
“You let him mark you?” Lucifer says, his voice imparting disgust. “A half-breed? You let a half-breed mark you?”
“You forget I am a half-breed too,” I remind him.
“You are anything but. You are remarkable,” he says proudly.
Well shit! I did not expect that kind of reaction from him.
I’m not really sure what I should’ve expected.
I always believed my sisters and I had the same father, yet somehow, I was different, but never put two and two together. I think somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew otherwise, but didn’t want to come to terms with whatever that answer might have been.
“Why are you here?” I ask. “Do you plan to just pop in unexpectedly whenever you feel like it?”
He rubs his jaw, considering my question. “No. I guess I’m as drawn to you as I was your mother.”
“Eww, that’s disgusting.”
He pinches the bridge of his nose at my outburst. “Not in that way. Stop that thought, now.” The tent flap opens, and Max enters. His tent is the biggest, but having three people in here is somewhat crowded.
“You killed one of my people,” Max snarls, his fists clenching at his sides.
“It would be best if you make sure your people don’t fuck with my child, then…” Lucifer trails off, but his eyes display the brightest red, and his face is one of pure, unadulterated fury.
Max replies, “Fair enough.”
“Fair enough?” I question, incredulous.
“He knows what is important, or he wouldn’t have branded you,” Lucifer says.
I point to Max. “Branded me? What on this green earth are you doing?”
“You consented.”
“You do have to consent,” Lucifer adds matter-of-factly.
I cover my face with my hands.
Oh my God.
That was when…
“It’s time for me to go,” Lucifer says, then disappears.
“It is,” Max agrees as he sits next to me and pulls my hands from my face. “You knew you were mine anyway. Now it’s cemented.”
“What if I choose not to be yours?” I ask, searching his icy-blue gaze.
“That won’t happen. I would never do anything intentionally to upset you.”
“Lying to me?” I say, eyes wide.
“I didn’t lie. I told you when I was fucking you that I needed words, and you gave me your words freely.”
I drop backward and pull the sheet up over my head, hiding from him.
“Pretty.” I ignore him and just lie there, trying to breathe.
Max lifts the sheet from the bottom and crawls up underneath until his head is level with my breasts, and he’s looking up at me. “Are you mad?”
“A little,” I answer truthfully.
“Let me help with that,” he says as one hand slides up my shirt and palms my breast.
“I’m sure there are more important things you should be doing.”
“This world is safer than ours. I’ve never felt this free in my lifetime.” He leans down and kisses my stomach.
“But we aren’t free. Don’t go underestimating Viper. He has tricks up his sleeve,” I tell him.
“Not as many as me.” His mouth finds my nipple, and he starts circling it with his tongue before he sucks hard, releasing with a pop. I stifle a moan until he repeats the process on the other side.
“I think this is unfair,” I tell him.
