He does what I tell him, and no one is more surprised than my father. My dad comes and takes my spot, and the doctor goes to the other side of him. “Where are your keys?”

He pats the two men on the back. “I’m good, guys. I can walk out of here. My keys are in the truck.”

“I have a set of crutches, Ace. You want those?” the doctor asks.

Ace doesn’t even answer him. He gives him a death glare and keeps hobbling on his hurt foot.

I walk out ahead of him. “All right then, cowboy, let’s get going.”

The drive to Jasper Hospital doesn’t take long, and when we get to the Emergency Room, they take Ace and me straight back.

A few doctors and nurses all talk to me, and almost as soon as we’re settled in a room, Callie, a nurse I work with, comes with a wheelchair.

Ace points at it. “I’ll walk.”

I roll my eyes and help him off the bed and into the chair. “Trust me; this will be a lot easier and less painful.”

He grits his teeth, and I take the boot and sock off again before rolling up his pant leg. I try to ignore the way Callie is looking at Ace.

I stand up and cross my arms over my chest, trying to refrain from taking the chair from Callie. I stand at the door and watch them go as I hear Callie flirting with Ace. It never fails. Women are always hitting on Ace, and there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s not like he’s mine or anything.

I pace back and forth in the small room until he comes back. He climbs into the bed, and I stand off to the side watching as Callie helps him. I almost roll my eyes, but I can’t look away from them. Callie pulls a notepad from the front pocket of her scrubs and writes something down. She hands it to Ace. “Call me.”

My mouth falls open. She knows there’s a rule against hitting on patients. What is she even thinking? I have half a mind to say something, but I bite my tongue. Damn, this night just keeps getting worse.

The doctor comes in, and after saying hi to me, he starts to examine Ace. “So I have some good news and some bad news.”

“Bad news first,” Ace answers him.

“You have a high ankle sprain.”

Ace takes his hat off and wipes his forearm across his head. “So it’s not broken?”

The doctor keeps touching the area of his ankle and on up his leg. “No. That’s the good news. But let me tell you, don’t think that a high ankle sprain is something to mess with. Football players are out months for a high ankle sprain, and sometimes it requires surgery to fix. We’re going to get you fitted with a boot, and I need you to stay off it as much as possible.”

“Sure thing, Doc,” Ace answers him, and the doctor looks pleased. He has no idea that Ace will get out of here and do the exact opposite of everything he just said.

It takes a while for them to fit him with a boot, but as soon as they do, we’re on our way to his ranch in Whiskey Valley. “You need some pain meds or anything?”

The doctor wrote a prescription for pain medication, but Ace normally stays away from that kind of stuff. “No, I’m good.”

We’re quiet most of the way to the ranch until I can’t hold it in any longer. “You going to call Callie?”

I can feel his eyes on me, but I keep mine trained on the road. “Who’s Callie?”

I tighten my grasp on the steering wheel. “The nurse that took you for an x-ray. She gave you her number, and you put it in your pocket.”

“No, I’m not going to call her.” He digs her number out of his pocket and stuffs it in my purse. “I didn’t want to trash it or say something rude to her since she was your friend and all, but no, I’m not going to call her.”

I let out a breath and shrug my shoulders like I don’t care one way or another.

Ace turns in his seat and faces me. “We need to talk about tonight.”

I already know what he’s going to say, and I’ve had time to think about it. He’s going to say the kiss meant nothing, and it shouldn’t have happened. I hold my hand up and force a smile on my face. “I already know what you’re going to say, and I agree with you. We shouldn’t have kissed. I know we just got caught up in the moment. Let’s just forget it even happened.”

As soon as I force the words out, I chance a look over at Ace. He’s watching me closely, and I smile at him. He shakes his head. “Actually, I was going to have you promise never to run into an arena with a bull again, princess. That’s what I was going to say.”
