“You should,” she smiles, though I can see she doesn’t blame me too badly.

I always treat my clients well. My aim is always to provide them with the highest level of service possible.

I go above and beyond because I know that the next time they need something or hear about a friend needing something, they’ll come back to me, and those efforts will be rewarded with more business.

It’s not like I intended to give her lackluster service in the first place, but now that I know she was looking for me, I’m determined.

I’m going to help her out as best as I can. Whatever she needs, I will find it out for her. No matter how long it takes, I’m going to help her.

Because in doing so, I might just be able to spend a lot more time with her, and that is something I’d even be willing to waive my fee for.

“Let’s start again and do this properly,” I say, wanting her to know that I’m taking her seriously as a client in spite of the way we got started. “My name is Hunter Jacobs. I’m a private detective. How can I help you today, ma’am?”

“Ma’am?” she says and blushes, shaking her head. “No one ever calls me ma’am. I’m eighteen.”

That has me blinking my eyes.

Eighteen?

Something about the way she carries herself – I could have sworn she was in her mid-twenties, at the very least.

But she’s only eighteen. Is this right?

Part of me is in turmoil. She’s so young. I feel like I might be taking advantage of her if I make a move. The age difference is huge – almost twenty years.

But I look at her, and I know that the truth is, it doesn’t matter to me. It’s never going to matter to me.

She’s gorgeous. She’s incredible, and I want her to be mine.

Maybe I’m going to hell, but damn it, she’s worth it.

I’m not giving up a chance to get to know her better – and I’m not giving up the determination to make her mine.

“What’s your name, miss?” I ask, playfully changing her title.

“Jenna Moore,” she says, and I shift myself closer to her in my chair, ready to ask the next question.

I immediately feel something spark between us – something strong and undeniable. I look up and meet her eyes, and I think I might be about to fall into their deep blue depths because I can’t bring myself to look away.

That is until my eyes drop down as if magnetized to her lips.

CHAPTER FIVE

Jenna

I can’t believe how lucky I am today – even if, in some other ways, I’ve been incredibly unlucky.

Yes, I had to go through all of that in order to find him. But now, here we are. And it turns out my knight in shining armor, who just happens to be the most handsome man I’ve ever set eyes on, is the man I was looking for all along.

The man I want to hire to work with me. The man I might need to meet multiple times in a row over the course of weeks to get the answers I’m looking for.

He’s the man who might answer all of my life’s problems. How much luckier could one person get?

And there’s more, too. He shifts closer to me now, and there’s a pregnant pause in the air. When I look up, he’s staring right into my eyes – those dark pools in his face reflecting back to my soul.

Then his gaze drops down to my mouth, and I feel so much tension in the air that I stop breathing for a moment.

Is he going to do it?

Is he going to kiss me?

I feel myself starting to drift toward him. Is he going to kiss me?

He blinks and sits upright, shifting back away from me. He looks away and then gets up suddenly, walking around to the other side of his desk.

Right, the other side of his desk where he works because this is his job, and not some kind of date.

Oh, god, I’m such an idiot sometimes.

He grabs a piece of paper from out of a pile on the side of his desk and a pen and then starts making notes on it. “Jenna Moore,” he says, and hearing him say my name out loud makes my heart flutter madly for a moment.

“So, tell me about what it is that brought you to me today.”

Angels? I think. Fate? Destiny? Someone up there in the sky who knew I really needed to meet someone who looks like you?

“It’s my father,” I say, and the sobering truth brings me right back down to earth. “I need someone to follow him and find out what he’s doing because whatever he’s doing, I know it isn’t right.”

Hunter raises an eyebrow at me. “Your father?” he asks.
