CHAPTER TWO
Hunter
If there’s one thing I can’t stand to witness, it’s bullying.
Call it a throwback to my days at school. I hated it then, too. I was always the little kid with a big temper who would stand up to bullies and make them stop picking on the weaker ones.
I found there were many ways to get bullies to back off. Sometimes it involved their parents, and sometimes it involved money. Other times I just had to make sure they got in trouble for what they were doing.
But mostly, making myself as loud and scary as possible was enough to put the pecking order back the way it should be.
I had been watching the group of boys from my window for a while. At first, they were just hanging out down there. That was enough to make me wary.
Knowing gangs of boys like that, they’re liable to cause trouble, and I have clients who walk along this road to visit the office. There’s no way I was taking my eye off them so long as I was waiting for someone to come in.
Plus, I guess it just goes with the territory of being a private detective. Once you start looking at all the small details and paying attention to people, you can’t stop.
So, when the beautiful woman walked out into the street, and they started to harass her, I noticed it right away.
And there was no way I was going to let it continue.
Just as I was about to get up and go down there, I saw her walk away. I thought that was going to be the end of it. But when I turned around and saw them following her, I knew I had to intervene.
That’s why I’m jogging down my staircase at full speed. I burst through my front door and hurry down the street after a group of kids. The blatant bullying is not something I can stand for.
I rush after them until I see them throw something at her back, then again in quick succession. No more trying to catch up with them first. I do it without thinking.
“Hey!” I yell, putting all my power and fury into that one syllable, making the teenagers spin around and look at me.
Now’s the part where I have to actually back the yell up with something. Otherwise, I know they’ll turn on me, too.
Back then I had to pretend to be big when I was a kid. It’s been thirty years since then, and I don’t have to pretend anymore. I spend a lot of time at the gym. Growing to well over six feet with wide shoulders. I already look intimidating enough to many.
And the fact that I know my way around the streets thanks to my work, I can cash any checks that my mouth can write.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I ask, pinpointing the ringleader and addressing him, wasting no time on the others.
“What’s it to you?” he snaps back.
I know this type. Know how to deal with him.
I’ll have him running home to his mommy in three seconds.
“Do you know the maximum jail term for being a public nuisance?” I ask.
“What?” he scoffs, looking to his friends for validation of his scorn.
“What about assault? Do you know what that means?” I ask. I point upward toward the building I just came from. “Everything you just did is on camera. The police are already on their way.”
“What?” he repeats, less sure this time. “You can’t get me arrested for that.”
“Yeah, I can,” I tell him. I push aside my jacket, revealing the pistol I have a license to carry on my hip. “And I can also make sure you never harass anyone like that ever again.”
His eyes widen. His friends, who were already uncertain, break and run like the wind. He swears and then heads after them, casting glances back over his shoulder to make sure I’m not raising the gun and pointing it at him.
They’re gone, and we no longer need to worry about them. Although, part of me wonders if I should actually hand the tapes over to the police so the little brats learn a lesson.
Finally, I turn to give her my full attention, and my jaw drops. I knew she was beautiful from above, but I didn’t expect how stunning she would look up close like this.
She’s wearing a white dress that hugs her curvy figure under a long trench coat, unbuckled at the front. It’s classy and stylish and leaves a lot to the imagination while still making her look like the sexiest woman I’ve ever seen.
Her body is divine, all curves in the right places – the kind of body you can hold onto. I could sink into her breasts for days and never come up for oxygen.
