She tasted sweet, like the forbidden fruit she was. Her body was pressed against mine, and the feel of her soft curves against my hard chest made the blood drain from my head. Distantly, my risk mentality mindset was weighing the options. I’d already fucked up by kissing her. Should I cut my losses and get out now, or throw the rest of my caution to the wind and give us what we both so obviously wanted?

We were racing toward the latter. I backed her up a step, pinning her against the cubicle. There was a hunger in me, a desperate craving for more. I slid my hand up her back, underneath her shirt. The fine bones, the silky skin, the feel of her went straight to my head and drowned out the caution I’d lived my life by. I didn’t care that she was a junior associate or Jake’s ex and best friend or that we were only feet away from a bank of windows. I wanted more.

And then something cut through the haze of lust and need. The office floor had been curiously silent, all the computers turned off for the weekend. The familiar sound of chatter and the coffee pot and printers absent. All I’d heard was the blood roaring in my head, Selena’s quiet moans. But now, we both heard the sound at the same time.

The sound of the elevator gears whirring. Defying logic, I gripped her closer rather than shoving away from her. Faces close together, breathing hard, we waited. If whoever was coming up stopped at this floor, we were fucked. There was no way I could hide my raging hard on. There was no mistaking Selena’s flushed cheeks and kiss-bruised mouth.

Miraculously, the elevator didn’t stop on the fifth floor but rather continued up. It must have been someone in upper management flouting the rules. Probably Albert, if I had to guess. He didn’t drink, and he was a workaholic.

Selena went limp with relief, slipping out of my grip. “That was close,” she said quietly.

“Too fucking close,” I agreed grimly. I shoved my hands in my pockets and backed away a step. I wanted to tell her this wasn’t something I did–in twenty years, I hadn’t so much as checked out a junior associate’s ass, much less grabbed onto one like a drowning man onto a life raft. It came out harsh and distorted though. “I don’t do this shit.” My voice sounded like a growl even to my own ears.

Selena’s back stiffened. Her eyes narrowed. “What don’t you do, exactly?”

I pulled one hand from my pocket to gesture between us. “This. I don’t fuck with employees.”

“Okay, so,” Selin tilted her head and put a finger to her lip as if contemplating something, “I imagined the last five minutes?”

Aggravated, I ran a hand through my close-cropped hair, then slid it back to cup my neck. “You’re the exception.” It might have sounded like a compliment if my voice didn’t have that nasty snap in it. Either way, Selena didn’t take it that way.

“Well, I don’t do this either,” she said, lifting her chin. Her eyes were defiant, but it was about as intimidating as Bambi going up against the hunters. And, infuriatingly, it made me want to grab her again. I knotted my hands into fists and shoved them deep into my pockets again. “Then we’re on the same page.”

“Completely,” she said grimly, pushing away from the cubicle and swiping a hand over her mouth, as if she could wipe away what happened. As if her hair wasn’t still disheveled from my hands running through it, her shirt half untucked, her chest still heaving.

It took everything in me not to push her back against that cubicle and do what I’d been imagining for weeks.

She gave me wide berth as she passed, careful not to let her shoulder brush mine. It pissed me off. I hadn’t pushed myself on her. I welcomed the anger though. It kept me from following her. I stayed by her cubicle as she jabbed the elevator button, determinedly not looking back over at me.

It seemed like an eternity before the carriage arrived. I had enough time to dismiss half a dozen urges to cross the space between us and finish what we started before the doors finally slid open.

Now she did look back at me. The distance and shadows made it hard to read her expression, but I saw the glimmer of her eyes. The white of her teeth biting down on her lower lip. I tensed. Was she changing her mind about leaving? If she did, how the hell was I going to push her away again? My heart was already picking up the pace in my chest, my mouth going dry. Fuck pushing her away again, I was going to–
