“I love you too.” I rubbed my nose against hers, wanting to treasure this quiet moment forever. But the thing about having young kids was the terrible chaos that existed at all times. They were only quiet when they were asleep, and if they were quiet when they weren’t asleep, that wasn’t a good sign.
Charles started yelling down the hall, and McKenzie cried a moment later.
I wanted to hold my wife like this a little longer, to have this connection stretch indefinitely. But I had to share my heart with two other people.
“It’s just you and me tonight.”
“Yes. But I prefer it when it’s all four of us.”
“You do?” She smiled as she cupped my cheek.
“I wish I had more time with you sometimes, not just the nighttime. But no, I wouldn’t change anything. I never knew how much I wanted this until I had it. And now I wouldn’t trade it for anything.” I leaned in and kissed the corner of her mouth. “Our lives will pass so quickly now…because time flies when you’re happy. And I’m very happy.”
