It was a damn good thing I was holding onto the door because my legs suddenly felt like jelly.

“Goodnight, Ryan,” I whispered, my voice sounding way too husky and deep.

He drew back and winked at me before he headed out the door. I let out a deep breath and locked it behind him, then set my alarm.

I headed toward my bedroom. That was twice in one day Ryan had left me feeling like I might melt into a puddle on the floor.

Stripping, I hung up my dress and slipped out of my bra and panties. My thoughts kept going back to Ryan. His smile. The heated looks he had given me tonight. The whispered goodbye that I swore hinted at something more.

After taking a shower and answering a few emails, I couldn’t take it any longer. My thoughts kept moving back to Ryan. If his phone hadn’t gone off, I was positive he’d been about to kiss me. The sexual tension between us earlier was so thick, you could have cut it with a knife.

“Ugh. Damn mare!” I said as I shut my laptop and crawled into bed, slipping under the covers.

I wasn’t sure how long I stared up at the ceiling, willing myself to think of something other than Ryan. The throbbing between my legs only grew more intense until I finally gave in. With my hand between my legs—and naughty images in my head pretending it was Ryan’s mouth instead—I soon cried out his name as an orgasm ripped through my body.

Panting, I rolled over and grabbed the pillow he’d slept on the night before, hugging it to my body.

Slowly drifting off to sleep, I wondered if Ryan was thinking of me too.

My phone alarm sounded, and I reached over to turn it off. After stretching, I pushed the covers off me and got ready to head to the gym. I’d double-checked that the spin class this morning wasn’t advanced.

I made a cup of coffee to go, grabbed my cell, and made sure my license, gym card, and a debit card were all tucked into the little pouch on the back of my phone. On a whim, I sent a text to Ryan.

Me: Spin class this morning?

It didn’t take him long to reply.

Ryan: Slacker. I’ve already been at the gym for thirty minutes.

Grinning like a fool, I sent him another text saying I’d see him soon.

My phone buzzed again, and a text from Krista popped up, asking about dinner. I started to reply to her as I attempted to juggle my coffee, the phone, and unlocking my front door. When I stepped outside, I immediately tripped over something.

I looked down, then staggered back into my apartment as I let out a scream that I was sure my parents could hear all the way at our ranch. I slammed the door shut, tripped over my feet, and fell hard onto my ass. Scrambling away from the door, I started crying as I called the first person I could think of.

The second Ryan answered, I attempted to speak.

“What’re you saying? Morgan! Sweetheart, I can’t understand what you’re saying. Take a breath for me.”

“The cat! Ryan, the cat! Oh my God! It’s dead! It’s dead…” I cried harder as I pressed my back against the cabinets in the kitchen.

“The cat? From last night?”

“Someone killed the cat! They killed him and put him at my door!”

Ryan cursed. “I’m on my way.”

The door to my apartment flew open less than five minutes later. The second Ryan saw me on the floor, he came rushing over and dropped to his knees. I threw myself against his body and cried hysterically.

I wasn’t normally so freaking emotional, but the image of the dead cat, a knife sticking out of his fur, was more than enough to make me lose it.

“Shh, it’s okay. It’s okay.”

I shook my head. It wasn’t okay. I would never be able to get the image of that sweet orange and white cat with a knife in his chest out of my mind.

“Someone killed him!” I sobbed. “They killed him!”

Ryan held onto me as he pulled out his phone. “Blayze, I need you to get to Morgan’s. She’s okay, but I think we need to call the police. Someone killed a cat and left it at her door.”

I buried my face deeper into Ryan’s chest. My body shook with both anger and fear. Who would do something like that to an innocent cat?

Lifting my head slightly, I looked up at Ryan. “Do you…do you think…those teenagers did it again?”

He tightened his arms and pulled me back against his body. “I’m not sure, but we’ll find out. I promise you, we’ll find out.”

Chapter Eight

RYAN

It turned out Blayze and Georgiana were already headed into town to meet with their wedding planner, so they got to Morgan’s place before the police did. Georgiana rushed into the apartment and took Morgan into her bedroom while I joined Blayze outside. The police showed up a minute or so after that.
