His hands rubbed up and down my back. “Why’s that, baby?”

“I’m still on probation. Any little slip up -- like the one today -- and there’s a high probability I’ll go back to prison.” I shook my head, stopping my movements as the reality truly sank in. “I can’t go back to prison if I’m pregnant. I’d never be able to stop myself from fighting back and, with the reputation I already had, they’d be merciless in attacking me. Just for the fun of it. No way I make it through a pregnancy without losing the baby.” I tried to roll off Chase, but his arms clamped around me like a vise.

“You listen to me, Cotton, and you listen good.” His whole demeanor changed. He’d started to lighten up a bit, but now he was back to being aggressive. “You ain’t goin’ back to prison. Not for any reason. There’s even a hint that’s comin’ down and you and I will disappear. No one will ever find us. But under no circumstances are you goin’ back to prison. I’ll kill every motherfucker I have to to keep that from happening. You get me?”

I looked into his eyes. This was the first time I could actually see the kind of killer he was. I could finally reconcile the Chase Dutton I knew with the assassin he’d told me he’d been in a former life. That man was still there. Buried deep, but there nonetheless. “I understand,” I whispered.

“Good. You see me, don’t you?” He knew I saw the ruthless killer inside him. Had probably let that side of him show on purpose to drive his point home. “This is the man you’ve given yourself to. The man who’ll protect you and our children with deadly force. I’d give my life to protect you, honey, but only if I can’t kill a motherfucker. There is no world where you or our children are not protected from everything and everyone who wants to harm you. That includes anyone trying to take you back to prison. It ain’t happening, Cotton.”

Again, I nodded. I should have been horrified. Scared even. Instead, I was elated. Joy burst through me in an unexpected fireworks display. Here was someone who truly loved me. Who was willing to kill to keep me safe.

My voice broke. “I don’t deserve you, Chase. But I’m not letting you go. I want you for my very own and I don’t care if I deserve you or not!” I burst into tears.

I wrapped my arms tightly around Chase’s neck, burying my face in his neck as I sobbed like a baby. Chase held me as tightly as I held him. He just let me cry, clinging to me as I clung to him.

When my tears finally slowed, Chase rolled us over, never lessening his hold on me. Then he started to move inside me. He kissed the side of my neck. My jaw. My face. When he settled on my lips, I opened for him eagerly, needing to kiss him more than anything. I tasted my tears on his tongue where he’d kissed them away. When he took us both to bliss, I cried out his name and reveled as his hot seed spilled inside me once again.

Chase gazed down at me as he stroked my hair, his cock still firmly embedded in my pussy. “You deserve a man better than me, Cotton. But I’ll be ruthless in protecting you. I’ll give you anything you want if it’s within my power to provide it. And I’ll love you until the end of my days.”

He leaned down and kissed me gently before finally sliding out of me. He scooped me up and took me to the bathroom where he washed us both. After he’d cleaned me, I sat on the vanity, Chase standing between my spread legs, his forehead against mine.

“I love you, Cotton. Don’t ever scare me like that again. Not sure my heart can take it.”

“Just so you know, I’m done driving. I’ll just go with you from now on.”

He chuckled. “Nope. You’re getting your license. Never know when you might need it and takin’ care of you means makin’ sure you can take care of yourself sometimes.”

“Ugh,” I grumbled, wrapping my arms around his neck and burying my face there. “Don’t wanna.”

“I know, baby. But when you get bucked off, you gotta get back on the horse.”

“Maybe I could learn to ride a horse instead. It’s bound to be easier. Fewer parts to worry about.”

His chuckle warmed me and made me smile. “Sure. But it’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Besides, we don’t have a barn.”

“Fine,” I grumped. “I’ll try again.”

“That’s my girl.” He gave me a hard kiss before pulling back to look at me. “Now. About that spanking…”
