“Ready to go, baby?” Chase rested his hands on my shoulders where I sat at the vanity in our bedroom. I was finishing up my hair and what little bit of makeup I wore. He kissed the top of my head. He was taking me out tonight. I’d begged him to go back to the bar. I wanted to see my friends and some of the patrons. Other than Butch and his bunch, I’d have really enjoyed my time at the bar if I hadn’t been so worried about keeping my nose clean. It was a fun, if rowdy, bunch most of the time.
I smiled up at him. “I’m ready. Thank you, Chase. Thanks for taking me on.”
“Honey, I’m pretty sure it was you takin’ me on. The rest of the guys keep tellin’ me I don’t deserve you and that someone will come along and convince you to throw your lot in with someone a lot younger and better looking.”
As I’d hoped, that got a giggle out of her. “Never! You’re my one and only.”
“Now, that’s what I like to hear.” He leaned in and kissed my lips gently. “Let’s go. Got a bunch of the brothers and their ol’ ladies gonna be there. We’ll have a ball.”
“I can’t wait.” The excited smile on my lips was genuine.
Chase took my hand and we headed to his bike. I absolutely loved riding behind him. Since my accident, he’d ditched the truck and had me riding with him everywhere we went. I suspect it was to get me addicted to riding so I’d put off getting my license a while but had no proof. Once we were on the road, we headed to the Boneyard.
As I knew it would be on a Friday night, the place was booming. There was a party going on at the clubhouse, but that seemed to be more for the prospects and younger patched members. All the married or attached members were at the bar. The noise drifted outside and was nearly as loud in the parking lot as it was outside the Bones clubhouse during party time. While it was always a good time at the Boneyard, this seemed to be an exceptional celebration.
“Big party tonight, huh?” I grinned up at Chase. He knew how much I’d been looking forward to this. I had no doubt in my mine he was the one to get everyone together in order to make this the best possible experience for me he could.
“Seems that way.” I pulled off my helmet and handed it to him as I jumped off the bike and started across the parking lot.
“Wait for me, baby.” Chase barked out the command and I stopped automatically. “Good girl,” he said with a cheeky grin.
I was about to call out to him that I wasn’t a dog when the screech of tires drew my attention. A dark sedan whipped into the parking lot, speeding toward me, the tires peeling out as the driver accelerated. I had time to scream, knowing there was no way I could avoid the vehicle as I braced for the impact.
Chase called out my name, a sharp, panicked warning. Something hit me, knocking me to the side. A man? We rolled several times before coming to a stop. At first, I thought it was Chase, but he wasn’t close enough to have gotten to me in time and was on the wrong side. Before I had a chance to identify my savior, the man lifted me off him by the waist and lowered me gently to the pavement before jumping up and sprinting to his bike close to us. He started it up and sped off after the car.
“Are you hurt, Cotton?” Chase skidded to my side on his knees, running his hands over me. “Talk to me, baby.”
“I’m fine. That car was going to hit me.” My breath came in gasps as I tried to stand. Chase held me down gently but insistently. “Who got me out of the way?”
“Not sure, baby.” We were interrupted when several members of Bones rushed out of the clubhouse, guns drawn. Someone must have alerted them to the incident. When Chase pointed in the direction the car and the guy on the bike had gone, I figured it had probably been him. “One in a dark blue Audi. One on an Indian Scout.”
“The guy on the Scout’s with ExFil,” Cain barked. “If he’s on lead, take your orders from him in the field.”
Then every single biker in Bones MC took off in the direction of the car that had tried to run me over. Their women were at my side immediately. I looked up at Chase. His face was a mask of fury. He looked at me with such fear and tenderness, but the second he looked away, I could see he was ready to kill.
