‘William?’ she asked, her brows drawing together.

I closed my eyes for a second and took a deep breath, hoping that would help. It didn’t – all I could smell and see was Charlie.

‘I’m listening,’ I muttered, angry at myself.

The confusion didn’t clear from her face, but she kept going. ‘After I realized where he brought me, I tried to get him to leave, but he slipped away from me.’

‘You can’t find him, that’s why you called Gayle?’ I asked, still trying to focus on the subject.

‘My dad can’t know I let him come here.’

‘Why?’

‘Charlie?’ someone shouted and Charlie looked over her shoulder, but kept her body against mine.

I had to get a grip of myself.

I looked up and saw the waiter talking to her.

‘That way?’ Charlie asked, raising her voice, both of them looking at some spot over my shoulder.

The guy nodded, and I felt her slightly relax next to me.

‘Thank you so much,’ Charlie said, and then the next thing I knew the guy put his hand on her waist and said something in her ear and she shook her head, then he let his hand slide off as he walked away. Charlie had practically pushed herself against me, I assumed to avoid his touch, and I had to wrap my arm around her waist to hold both of us still.

When she looked up at me, her cheeks were flushed.

A girl on her way down to the dance floor bumped into her and Charlie put her left hand on my chest and awareness jolted through me. We might as well have plastered our bodies together while we were at it. If I had never thought about kissing her before, the way we were standing would have put an end to that very quickly. But I already had so many times. Looking straight into my eyes and without even realizing her effect on me, she licked her lips. I could feel her heartbeat quicken against me because her chest was falling and rising faster.

‘Fuck,’ I muttered and closed my eyes for a moment.

I had to stop looking at her lips – and thinking how she hadn’t kissed anyone in years and that I’d love to be the one she kissed for the first time again – just for my sanity, if nothing else.

My jaw tightened. I opened my eyes and cleared my throat at the exact same time she looked away and took a small step back, lowering her hands from my chest. We both chose to ignore the moment.

‘A friend of yours?’ I asked, but couldn’t exactly find the strength in me to drop my hand from her waist.

She looked at me again. ‘Who?’

‘The waiter.’

‘Oh, yes. No, I mean, I don’t know him, but he saw who I was with when we first came in, so he knew who I was looking for.’

I knew I had no right to ask, but I had to… ‘But the way he touched you…’

‘Oh, that.’ She took another step back from me, and I had to let her go. ‘That is probably because this is a…’

I couldn’t understand what she said, so I leaned a little down and asked her to repeat it.

Her response didn’t come quick. ‘I don’t want to shout.’

Frowning a little, I leaned down until her face was next to mine, and I could feel her hair against my cheek. I closed my eyes, waiting for her answer.

She tilted her head up until her mouth was right next to my ear and put her hand on my shoulder to hold on again.

‘You’re going to kill me,’ she whispered into my ear and my eyes opened waiting to hear the rest. She was practically killing me too. ‘Apparently this is a sex club for the rich. Welcome!’

I opened my mouth to say something, but couldn’t think of anything particularly helpful. I drew back a little and met Charlie’s eyes, then my gaze dropped to the small smile dancing on her lips and my frown deepened.

Leaning down again, I spoke into her ear. ‘Did you say sex club?’

When I looked at her face, another grin was tugging at her lips and she was nodding at me. She got on her tiptoes and pulled me down with her hand that was still on my shoulder to whisper back to me. ‘We really need to find him though. We can’t risk anyone recognizing him. I called Gayle because I didn’t think I could handle him by myself. You being here is better.’

I took a moment to take in our surroundings. Nobody was actually having sex right in the open, but I could see that it wasn’t just another bar.

Curiosity won. ‘What did the waiter say in your ear?’ I asked this time.

Her mouth curved into a big beautiful smile. ‘He asked if I was interested.’
