Not to mention a mom who chose someone else, a man she barely knew, and left her kids and her marriage, only to never even call them again.

When you thought about it, it was high time I made some real changes and a real list would be a good place to start. The written word always had more power. Downing the rest of my prosecco, I picked up my half-eaten plate and the now empty bottle and left them in the sink.

Heading to the corner in the living room where my narrow desk lived, I picked up a legal pad and a pen and settled down on the window seat, trying to think of new rules to live by. I rested the side of my head on the windowpane and glanced at the pear tree right outside the townhouse. Then, after thinking for a little while, I started on my list.

Make sure you don’t die alone.

How I was gonna actually make sure that I didn’t die alone I had no idea, since I sucked at dating or finding a decent person, but even admitting that I didn’t want to die alone felt as good a start as any. After some more thinking I added:

But also please don’t settle just because you’re afraid of dying alone.

I’d rather spend years alone than settle down and make myself even more miserable. I wanted to be head over heels in love, not kind of in love.

Biting the end of the pen and chewing it between my lips, I thought about the second item that would have to be on my list. It didn’t take long.

Move. Move. MOVE.

Once I started writing, the rest came easily and I had my checklist of life rules in no time:

– Make sure you don’t die alone. But also please don’t settle just because you’re afraid of dying alone.

– Move. Move. MOVE.

– Romanticize your life a little. We only live once and if you want to make your Sunday breakfast special, or if you just want to watch the stars one night instead of watching TV, or if you want to light all the candles and just read – do it. Make sure you enjoy your life, make sure you’re happy; nobody else is gonna think about you as much as you think about yourself. Main character energy is what you’ll strive for.

– Experience love at first sight. Highly unlikely to happen, but you never know.

– Move.

– Laugh more. This is a necessity. You have to do it. Don’t become like your grandma.

– Be honest as much as you can. (If you feel something, you have to talk about it. It causes nothing but hurt when you bottle it all inside.)

– It’s okay to be selfish sometimes. You’re important. You need to be your number one.

– Do NOT, I repeat do NOT postpone your life anymore.

– MOVE.

– Flirt. Flirting is fun and you’re surprisingly not the worst flirt in the world. Try it a few times.

– Kiss a lot. It makes you happy and smiley and all gooey inside. You went without it long enough. Find someone who is a good kisser and KISS for days. Enough is enough.

– Fall for a stranger again. Even it’s for only the night. At least once more, because you know how that feels in your heart. (Very important as well.)

– But really fall in love with someone who deserves to have you in their life. Somebody who won’t make you wonder if you matter or not. Otherwise forget about it. (I really want you to fall in love.)

– A puppy. You need a puppy in your life. A rescue. A cute little good boy maybe?

– Surround yourself with people who knows how to hug the right way. A good hug can fix a lot of things.

– You know how much words hurt. Be kind to the ones around you.

– Find your happy every day. No matter what. No matter who. You need to have a smile on your face every night when you go to bed.

– And LIVE. You’ve only got this one life, don’t waste it. Like a good book, make every chapter of your life something you’re proud of. You don’t want to look back and only see everything you’ve missed out on.

– Sex. It’s all I’m going to say. S.E.X. Find someone who knows all the positions. Or at least more than one. And it wouldn’t be that bad if you actually orgasmed every once in a while – with an actual live penis, that is. And it needs to be longer than two minutes. Please.

– Don’t ever change your life around for a guy. Or wait around for them.

God save me, but I was gonna have to give online dating another go. If I felt completely hopeless, maybe even a blind date.
