He sighed. ‘A man. You’re gonna live with a man.’ His hands flexed around my waist. ‘And good. I’m jealous enough of you as it is. I don’t want to imagine you having lived with another guy before. Are you excited?’

I nodded, grinning.

He took me in for a good long while and then it was him asking me, ‘You’re in love with me too?’

‘So utterly in love.’ I leaned down and gently kissed his lips, trying to show him just how much. The kiss started slow, just our lips, then I felt the tip of his tongue and we were kissing as if we had been apart for years and this was the first time we were touching each other.

The thirst was unimaginable.

Then I think I moaned and all of a sudden I was under him and his body was over mine. When we stopped, both of us were breathless and his chest was rising and falling even faster than mine. I couldn’t remember a single other time I felt the happiness I was feeling in that moment. He brushed my hair away from my face and then moved his hand down our bodies until he was holding my hand, our fingers intertwined.

My heart was drenched in love, there was no other explanation.

‘You’re the one for me, Charlie. You were always the one, even from the beginning. You’re all I need, and you won’t ever feel the need to flirt with another guy because you’ll have me. I’ll banter and argue with you – just to make you happy. Then I’ll kiss you senseless and you’ll smile at me, just like you’re smiling now, and I won’t need anything else in life. But we’ll never have to pretend that we’re something because it’ll always be true. And I promise you, I won’t let you die alone while you’re choking on your food.’ I gasped and he laughed, his fingers flexing around mine and holding tighter. ‘It’s us from now on. We’ll have each other. Always. I won’t screw this up, not again. And if by a very thin chance I do, I’ll always find my way back to you. In every lifetime. I promise you, I’ll make you happy and give you all the cheese. I promise.’
