Sam furrows his eyebrows, looking confused. “But what do you have going on, honey? I thought you quit Club Z.”

I smile bashfully. “I did take a hiatus from my hostessing duties. But I also got a really big gig playing at a new café that just opened downtown,” I confess. “I was going to tell you later today because my first show at the new venue is coming up, and if it goes well, I could become a bit of a regular.”

“That’s incredible baby,” Sam growls, pulling me to him. “I’m so proud of you.”

“Thank you,” I sigh blissfully. “It is a bit of a dream come true.”

He chuckles.

“So are you finally going to let me come see you perform?” he asks, his breath ruffling my hair.

I giggle. “Yes. You may come to my show tomorrow night,” I offer magnanimously.

“Good.”

I frown. “But I guess… can you see why I don’t want to start a new drug that might mess with my body? I just want to stay focused on my music for now and being puffy and achy aren’t really in the works.”

“Yes, of course I understand,” Sam assures quickly. “It makes total sense.”

I nod. “It’s not that I don’t want straight sex with you,” I explain. “I really do want to feel you deep inside the regular way, trust me. But I just want us to take things slow and now isn’t the optimal time for the pill.”

Sam nods slowly, looking thoughtful. “Well, you know we have other options too, honey. Condoms, but they’re not foolproof. Or that much fun either, if I’m being honest. I love feeling you wet and bare around me,” he growls, those blue eyes flaring with heat.

I giggle.

“Agreed,” I tell him. Sam cocks his head then, his black hair flopping attractively over one eye.

“But would you consider pregnancy-prevention shots?”

I stare at him.

“I don’t know much about them actually.”

Sam nods. “There’s an injection called Depo-Provera, and you get it every twelve weeks in the arm. It protects you from pregnancy during that time period, and it could work for us. Depending.”

I think for a moment.

“What are the side effects?”

He nods.

“Very similar to the pill, but usually a little less severe. Like the pill, this is a chemical means of contraception, so it regulates your hormone cycle but without the hassle of having to take a pill every day at the same time.”

“Hmm,” I consider the idea. “I guess it’s a thought.”

My man nods.

“And it’s convenient too because not only do you not have to take a pill every day, but I’m also a doctor, so I could just administer the shot here at home. It’s a possibility,” he says.

I consider my options. I absolutely want Sam in every way, but I also definitely don’t want to get pregnant. As tempting at it might be to imagine Sam knocking me up, it’s just not in the cards for a while yet, but maybe this injection is an option. I decide ‘yes’ because there’s no sense in waiting. We need some sort of contraception, and he’s right: even a drop of semen could get me pregnant if we’re not careful.

“Okay,” I say easily. “I’ll try it out, but if it drives me looney, then we need to think about other options.”

Sam grins widely. “Deal. We’ll start Monday, how about that? That way you can do your performance tonight without freaking out.”

I pull Sam down toward me and begin planting soft kisses down his face, making my way lower.

“But Monday is so far away,” I mock-whine while pressing an open-mouthed kiss to that broad, bronzed chest. “I guess I’ll have to find some way to distract myself until then.”

Sam chuckles before throwing me onto my back. “Trust me, I have an idea or two.”

Then, for the next few hours, I forget about my hunger, our conversation, and pretty much everything else except this incredible man who’s captured my heart.

Sam

Later that night.

When I enter the Bean Bar, I see that the coffee shop’s packed wall to wall with people, and I’m impressed. For some reason, I envisioned just a small crowd but instead, the big tables, high-tops, and lounge chairs are pretty full. The crowd is quite a mix too, with young families, hipsters, and older couples. Even a few teenagers have found a couch and are piled on it, staring at their phones as they wait for the show to begin.

I take a seat at a small table in the back. To be honest, I haven’t been to too many coffee shop concerts in my life because I’m more of an owner’s box, VIP ticket kind of guy. But then again, I’ve also never dated someone like Harlow. There’s a first time for everything, I muse while taking a sip of my cappuccino. This is damn good coffee, too.
