Everything is clear so far.

“Zoe?” I kept my voice low. “I need you.”

“Who’s the demon?” Zoe appeared in an explosion of silver dust, lounging on the edge of the tower’s railing. He only wore black underwear as he swung his long legs over the barrier and strolled to me.

His usual blond hair was gone. He was now completely bald, exposing solid silver skin.

“What happened to your hair?” I asked him as he targeted Azar with his silver eyes.

“More punishment from Adae.” Zoe leaned his head to the side and scrutinized Azar. “Why are you with an unchained demon, Fati?”

“Fati?” Azar hissed.

“That's Zoe's nickname for me.”

Azar stepped forward and stopped barely a foot away from Zoe.

I noticed the crystal sword hanging from Azar’s waist and wondered if it had been there the whole time. My nerves flared on edge. This was supposed to be the easy part, but Azar glared up at Zoe as if he were seconds from shedding the fairy’s blood.

What’s his problem?

Azar knew Zoe was a part of the plan.

“Zoe, I need your help.” I cleared my throat to get his attention.

Still watching Azar, Zoe crossed his silver arms around his bare chest. “I don’t know, Fati. Adae knows you like me. He shaved my head and took my clothes.”

“You like him?” Azar closed the distance and now gripped his sword.

When did the sword leave his side?

The crystal blade came to life, glowing gold. Demon magic thickened in the air.

Zoe looked at it and stepped back. Silver dust exploded around his head.

Azar sneered at Zoe. “Have you tasted Fati?”

“What?” Zoe stepped back and widened his eyes. “Never.”

I seized Azar’s huge arm. “Azar, stop,”

“We are talking, Fatou.”

“I told you, he is just my friend.”

“Azar?” Zoe muttered and stepped back further. “The Azar that killed a dozen of Adae’s guards in one minute? Are you fucking crazy, Fati?”

“Be careful,” Azar hissed.

“Enough.” I scowled at Azar and then directed my attention back to Zoe. “Why did Adae punish you?”

“Adae heard about the Boto brothers being killed. Plus, you haven’t been answering his calls.” Zoe covered his arms as if he were cold. His eyes remained on Azar’s sword. “Adae thought I knew something. But I told him you hadn’t answered my calls either.”

“You’ve been calling her?” Azar raised arched eyebrows.

I rolled my eyes at Azar. “Zoe likes guys. Relax.”

“What’s going on, Fati?” Zoe asked. “Why is he here with you?”

“Azar is helping me get Jade back.”

Zoe gasped. “What? Y-you can't—”

“She can.” Azar scowled. “And she will.”

I sighed. “I know this is asking a lot, Zoe—”

“Oh, no. You need my help too?” Zoe touched his chest. “Adae has no other way to punish me besides death.”

“Come away with us.”

“Where?”

“I can keep you hidden, Zoe. Just trust me.” I gestured to the tower. “Life can be better than this.”

“I am shit at concealing my power to humans and—”

“I can take you places where you don't have to hide.” I pointed to Azar. “He knows tons of places where supernaturals live secretly among humans.”

Does he?

I looked at Azar.

He nodded. “There are many territories that you can hide in, even ones that Adae could not enter.”

Zoe stepped forward. “What places?”

“We don't have time for that.” I shook my head. “Just help me and we will get Jade and you away.”

Zoe frowned. “What do you want me to do?”

“I need you to teleport us into the nursery cells. Azar can only spirit us to places that he’s seen before.” Hope filled me. “I’ll do anything, please. This is Jade we are talking about.”

“Where will you go?” Zoe asked, finally looking away from Azar and focusing on me. “Adae will search for you forever. He won’t stop.”

Azar answered for me. “I know where a hidden portal exists.”

Zoe uncrossed his arms from his chest. “And you will take me with you.”

“I will.” I put my hands on my hips. “Keep in mind that the first couple of months will be a lot of fleeing and hiding, but I could keep you safe.”

“I’ll teleport you to Jade, but you must hide and keep me safe.” Zoe disappeared and then reappeared on the railing closest to me. More silver dust rained on the tower and stuck to my skin. “Let’s face it, Adae will torture or kill me when he finds out you and Jade are gone.”

“We’ll take you with us.” Azar's sword disappeared. “But, first, you and I must talk.”

I raised my eyebrows. “What?”

Azar pointed to Zoe. “Him and I will have a conversation.”

“About what?”

Zoe reappeared next to us. Silver dust puffed near him. “I swear I have not had any relations with Fati.”

Azar shook his head. “This isn't about that.”

I eyed him. “Then, what?”

“Let me say something to you.” Azar grabbed Zoe in a flash and flew them high in the air before I could say anything.

What is he doing?
