I lift a brow and push against her finger. “Maybe not, but I know enough to recognize when a chick is sexually repressed.”

Another gasp escapes from her. “That’s not true.”

“Sure, it is.” I tip my head toward Audrey and Mallory. “Here’s a bit of unsolicited advice—maybe you should try loosening up and taking a page from their book. Who knows, you might actually enjoy it.” I allow my gaze to crawl down the length of her. “Maybe.”

When a growl vibrates from her chest, I grin. It’s almost too easy to stoke the flames of her anger and rile her up. I don’t remember the last time I purposefully teased a girl with the intention of pissing her off. Maybe middle school. It was somewhere around eighth grade that I realized annoying them to secure their attention was no longer necessary.

This girl is the exception to the rule.

“Not that it’s any of your business, but I enjoy sex just as much as everyone else.” She pulls back her hand just enough to drill her finger into my pec again. “What I don’t like is watching groupies hang all over a guy just because he plays a sport. It’s pathetic.”

Is that really what she thinks the allure is?

Well…let me kindly disabuse her of the notion.

I lower my face to the side of her head until my lips can graze the outer shell of her ear. The delicate fragrance I’d caught a whiff of minutes ago now inundates my senses.

“They don’t want to be with me because I play football, sweetheart. They do it because I’m hung like a bull and know how to make them scream when I eat their pussies.”

I pull back just enough to see her mouth tumble open for a second time before giving her a wink and strolling away.

If my intention had been to shock her into silence, that mission has been accomplished.

Two and a half hours later and I’m still steaming at what that asshole said to me.

The sheer audacity of him!

And furthermore, he has no idea what he’s talking about.

I’m not repressed.

Like, at all.

Well…not really.

So what if I’ve never been that into sex?

Between school and work, I barely have time to breathe let alone get involved in a relationship. The ones I’ve taken a chance on usually end up petering out after a few weeks. Shocker—most dudes aren’t interested in being third or fourth on my priority list and usually show themselves to the door before I get a chance to do it.

Once I’m done closing out all my tabs and clearing off the tables, I grab my purse and jacket from my locker in the backroom before heading out. After sitting through three classes at school and then waiting tables for five hours, I’m exhausted. The realization that I have a test to study for along with thirty pages of reading makes me want to cry.

Unfortunately, there’s no time for that. I learned a long time ago that tears are pointless. It’s better to focus on what needs to be accomplished and plow my way through that than complain or feel sorry for myself. If I’m lucky, I’ll finish up a little early so I can crash. Then I’ll wake up at the crack of dawn the next day and do it all over again.

On my way to the door, I pass Carmen’s younger brother, Mateo. When his feet stutter to a stop, mine do the same. He’s still in high school and is probably at the restaurant more than I am.

“Yo cuz, you’ll never guess who showed his face around here the other day.”

Ugh. I’m almost afraid to ask.

When I raise a brow in silent inquiry, he says, “Tony.”

Tony?

I blink. No matter what name I thought might pop out of his mouth, that wasn’t it. My brain somersaults, and it takes a couple of seconds before I’m able to find my words.

He drags a hand through his jet-black hair as his face sobers. “Sorry,” he mumbles. “I was just as surprised when he walked through the door.”

I clear my throat, striving for nonchalance even though it feels like I’m being strangled from the inside out. “What did he want?”

He jerks his shoulders. “Dunno. Just asked if you were around and wanted to know when you’re working next.”

My belly drops into a freefall, and I have to moisten my lips with my tongue. “Did you tell him?”

His expression darkens as his upper lip curls with disdain. “Of course not. That guy can go fuck himself.”

It’s only when my muscles loosen that I realize how tight they’d become in a few short seconds. “Thanks, Mateo. I appreciate it.”

“No worries.” A smile quirks his lips. “I got you, fam. I would never do anything to cause you problems.”

I nod, grateful for this part of my family. I don’t know what I would do without them. Other than my mom, they’re all I have.
