“What would you do if you were in my shoes?”

“Run like hell,” I admitted, and even as I said the words, I wondered why I was sabotaging my own efforts.

“There’s that honesty again. Why don’t you tell me how you really feel?”

I chuckled. “Not serving me right now, but I wouldn’t be doing it for a cause like the one you mentioned. I’d just be using the money on me, and I know how that turns out. It’s nice knowing you have something you can do to make a difference.”

“I’ll miss working at the station, but if that money is on the table and it can be used for something good, I’d be kind of a bastard if I didn’t do it just because it might be a little difficult.”

“You have a very interesting perspective, Jace. I’ll get Carter to send over a preliminary contract with my company and a disclosure that you promise not to work with any competitors while this deal is underway. Not anything that implies you have to take on whatever deal Hacksmore comes up with. Just to protect my company’s interests.”

“Oh, wow.”

“You have to understand, it’s not that I don’t trust—”

“But kind of,” Jace interrupted, his eyes narrowing.

“Well, I don’t really know you. I’ve worked with a lot of people, long enough to know when you need to stop trusting. Is that okay with you?”

“Dax, you don’t know me. You don’t have any reason to trust me. Trust is something a person earns.”

I was sort of blown away by his statement. “I really hope you’re everything you seem to be.”

“What does that mean?”

“Just…not every day I get to meet Batman.”

Jace laughed at my reference to our previous discussion. “I like hanging with you too, Dax. You’re a pretty cool guy.”

An awkward silence filled the room as we gazed into one another’s eyes.

This heat radiated from my solar plexus and filled my cheeks as my mind bombarded me with fantasies of all the things we could do to one another.

“Better get going,” he said, pushing to his feet, and I followed suit, escorting him to the door. Stopping before it, I turned to him and noticed him checking out my mouth, just sort of staring at it for a moment before his gaze lifted to my eyes. His brows popped up as though he wasn’t ashamed of my catching where his interest lay.

“Thank you for coming out here and…persuading me.”

“Didn’t take much to persuade you.”

“You should keep that in mind next time we see each other,” he said, his gaze returning to my lips, then took my hand and shook it.

I wondered if he felt what I felt, but then he lurched forward, his lips slamming down on mine. Oh fuck, how that magnetism radiating from his body made me tremble.

I itched with passion and fire until he pulled away and glanced at my lips a moment longer, then said, “Really nice meeting you.”

The smile that overtook his expression was all satisfaction and confidence, and he appeared unfazed by it all. With a slick wink, he opened the door and headed out, leaving me reeling in the pleasure coursing through me.

Holy fucking shit.

Jace

“How’s it going, Jace?” Dax asked as soon as I answered my cell.

I was officially flying out to London and then meeting with Hacksmore the following day to finalize and sign all the paperwork, if we all agreed to everything. Dax had hooked me up with an agent to assist me with my side of things in the negotiation process, and we were set to go.

“Pretty good.”

“I’ve been in meetings for the past few days, scheduling photoshoots and trying to figure out how the hell we’re going to get some of these details nailed down, but outside of that, everything looks ready. Carter has all your travel arrangements so that you can fly out on Wednesday.”

“Yeah. I got them. When do I get to see you?”

He snickered, and there was something so hot about the breathiness of it.

“Well, I scheduled you to be here a day before the meeting for a reason.”

“And here I was thinking you might have shoved me on a cheaper flight,” I teased.

“No. Only the best for you, Jace, don’t worry. I’m eager to see you again, been bothered by how short our last encounter was.”

“Funny you mention that. I have been too.”

“Didn’t have to be that short.”

No, it didn’t, but it was a little much for me at the time. I was surprised I’d even had the impulse to go at him like that. But those lips looked so goddamn pretty, so fucking kissable in the soft hotel-room light, and then when our lips touched…fuck.

“Well, maybe we can take care of that next time we see each other,” I said.

What the fuck was I saying? I didn’t know shit about being with a guy.
