We stand like that, ten feet apart, just staring at each other. My pulse hammers in my ears, and I swallow as I glance at him, and then the car.

“Going somewhere?

He shrugs. “Yeah, I was thinking about it.”

“Where?”

“Wherever I want, I guess. Or if we want to be cliched as fuck, ‘wherever the road takes me’,” he grins.

I frown. “What, now?”

“Yeah.”

“Right now. Five minutes after the wedding.”

“Right-right now.”

I smile curiously, my brow furrowing as I glance past him at the gleaming black vintage car.

“Were you going to pack anything?”

“Nope.”

I snort. “Seems a little reckless.”

“Yeah, well, sometimes you’ve just gotta get messy, Moaner.”

I blush, rolling my eyes as I kick at one piece of white gravel with the toe of my heel.

“You’re really leaving right now?”

He nods. “Yep.”

“Oh.”

I look down, but when I chance a look back up, he’s grinning as he stares right at me.

“What?” I say shyly.

“I was just thinking that you should probably come with me.”

My heart skips, jumping into my throat as my eyes go wide.

“Wait, what?”

“Come with me, Ramona,” he says quietly as he stands tall, stepping towards me away from the car.

“You mean just get into a car with you and drive to… wherever?”

“That’s the plan.”

My pulse quickens.

“With no luggage.”

“Not a stitch. We’ll pick up what we need on the road.”

I wet my lips, my heart pounding as he steps even closer.

“Jamison—”

“Look, I’ll even make sure we get extra floss and a day planner. You know, so you don’t lose it.”

I blush, grinning at him as he steps right into me.

“What about school?”

He shrugs. “We’ll call in some sick days. Look we’re not going away forever here.”

His hands go to my hips, and when they slide over me and tug me closer to him, I gasp quietly at his touch and the nearness of him after three weeks away from him.

“Okay, but what about—”

“Ramona.”

I blink, my mouth snapping shut as I look up into his eyes.

“Don’t think,” he says quietly. “For once, just don’t. Fucking. Think.”

“This is crazy,” I whisper.

“Then let’s go fucking nuts,” he growls.

“Jamison, we can’t just—”

“Ramona?” He tugs me into him, and I gasp when I fall against his chest as his arms circle me.

“Get messy,” he purrs quietly against my lips. “Let go, lose control, and get messy.”

“And you’re messy, aren’t you?”

“Fucking filthy,” he growls as he leans in.

Our lips sear together, and then, I’m lost. I moan into his mouth, kissing him fiercely until suddenly, I giggle as I shriek and jump into his arms. He laughs, spinning us around as he holds me tight, kissing me over and over and over until I’m drunk off of them.

“I love you, Moaner.”

I giggle. “I love you too, ya big bully.”

When the car roars to life around us, my pulse quickens. When I think about the fact that I’ve got nothing packed, my heart skips a beat. But when I look over at him, and when I reach over and lace my fingers with his over the shifter, and when he grins at me, and when that heat teases through me, I know.

I know nothing is ever going to be the same, and I know I’m so okay with that.

“Ready?”

“Yeah,” I breathe, squeezing his hand as he grins and puts the car into drive. The tires kick up white stone gravel, and suddenly, we’re off—roaring down the driveway, out of the gates, and down the road. Wind whips my hair totally free of i’s pins, and I let out a shriek as we barrel down the road into the unknown.

Just me, and him, and great unknown. And that’s all we need.

Epilogue

Ramona

Okay, I guess in the movie version of our lives, we drive off into the sunset forever and ever. Maybe open a bed and breakfast in the Florida Keys or something. As it happens, that’s exactly where we went—The Keys, for two weeks of bliss. Bliss, sunshine, and more orgasms that I could possibly count.

Eventually though, we of course had to go home. But that didn’t mean the honeymoon had to end. Actually, even now, it still hasn’t ended.

Sure, people at Winchester talked, but you know what? Screw them. I let go of that crap. I learned to live, and love, and get messy. And besides that, Winchester had plenty else to gossip and gab about after the great Ramona Weiss and Jamison Scott romance whirlwind. I mean, even ignoring that whole thing with Kempton Carlisle canoodling with both of the Truman brothers—the star quarterback and the hot new math teacher.

I mean there was that whole thing with Coach Kirby which almost brought the whole school down. And of course, later, there were those rumors about Principle Kane and—

Well, I’d hate to be a gossip queen. And besides, I’m sure they’re just tawdry rumors.

…Right?

Jamison and I made it the rest of the way through Winchester. We graduated with our friends, and then we spent the whole summer crisscrossing the country in the Mustang before we finally pointed ourselves in the direction of California, and college, and another whole chapter of the great unknown. But by then? Well, by then, we were pros at that whole “unknown” thing.
