“The ring is perfect,” I whispered against her lips. She moaned when I nipped lightly at her lower lip. “Just like you.”

She groaned, and grasping the back of my head, she dragged my lips to hers, kissing me properly.

Cecily

Clutching the toilet bowl, I retched, throwing up everything I’d managed to eat after getting home from work around two this morning. Adler was already gone for the day, having left at six A.M. after a previous customer called about some kind of emergency. I’d been too sleepy to remember the details.

Groaning, I reached forward to flush the toilet and wiped my mouth with a cloth. My stomach was still rolling, as it had been all morning. I’d already called Chelsea and told her I couldn’t come in. She dropped off soup earlier, but I didn’t let her inside in case whatever I had was contagious.

I’d made one can, but the smell of it had only made me feel worse. So, I didn’t even eat it.

After standing to my feet, I rinsed my mouth out and dragged myself back to bed, curling back up under the blankets. I’d already taken my temperature, but I wasn’t running a fever, and besides nausea and vomiting, I had zero other symptoms.

I closed my eyes, willing sleep to take me for a couple of hours so I could have some reprieve from whatever illness I had. I heard my phone vibrate with a text message, but I didn’t have the energy to grab it. If it was important, whoever it was would’ve called.

Adler

I stared down at the unread message to Cecily on my phone screen, frowning.

Hope you have a good day at work, sweetheart. I love you.

She hadn’t opened it, much less read it. I sighed and pocketed my phone again, sliding into my truck. One of the guys we’d previously done work for suddenly had a massive leak from under his kitchen sink while he was on vacation, and it ruined his kitchen floors. So, we’d come in and done the job for him. He was older, and it would’ve been extremely unsafe for him to walk on the floor.

I took off for home, which was officially now Cecily’s. We’d been engaged for two months already. The honeymoon phase hadn’t lasted long, but we were still madly in love with each other. Sometimes, I thought she did things just to purposely irk my nerves so we could make up later.

And man, the makeup sex was amazing.

Cecily’s car was still in the spot it was this morning when I left. Alarmed, I quickly shut the truck off and got out, jogging up the porch steps. Something was definitely wrong. Cecily didn’t miss work for shit.

The house was silent when I walked in. I prowled down the hall to our room. She was laying in bed, her eyes shut, sleeping peacefully. The bathroom light was on though, the door cracked. I frowned. It wasn’t like her to leave lights on. She was a big conserver of energy.

“Cecily?” I gently called, walking over to her. She’d chew my ear off later for walking through the clean house with dirty shoes, but I’d deal. Hell, I’d take her ranting at me over this. I knew something was wrong; I could feel it in my gut.

She groaned and slowly opened her eyes, squinting up at me. I crouched beside the bed, running my hand over her hair. “Hey, sweetheart,” I crooned. “You okay?”

“Sick,” she mumbled. “Nauseated.”

I didn’t stop the soothing motion of my hand over her hair. “How long have you been sick?”

“All day,” she told me. “Stomach is finally settling. Probably because I haven’t eaten anything.”

I brushed my lips to her forehead, worried as fuck over her. “Go back to sleep. I’m going to go get you some nausea stuff from the store.”

She nodded and snuggled deeper beneath the blankets, already nodding off again. I walked out of the house to head to the store, only one thing on my mind.

Had I fucked up somewhere along the line and accidentally gotten her pregnant?

When I got back to the house, Cecily was camped out on the couch in her newly-renovated living room. She had a blanket curled around her shoulders, the AC on full blast. A glance at the thermostat told me she had it as low as it could go. I didn’t comment on it. I just wanted her comfortable, even if it meant I’d probably freeze my ass off. Didn’t matter—I could layer my clothes.

“I got you some things,” I said, placing the bag on the coffee table in front of her. With a groan, she leaned forward and opened the plastic bag, her eyes widening at the sight of the pregnancy test. She didn’t even bother touching the nausea stuff I’d gotten her.

Slowly, she pulled the box out, her hand trembling. I crouched in front of her, settling my hands over hers on the box. She looked at me, worry in the depths of her blue eyes.
