A low chuckle made me freeze and let out a sigh. “Daddy?”
He was nearly giggling as he kissed my head. “Yes, how is my naughty boy feeling?”
I took a second to think about it and take stock of myself. “My head hurts. My tummy feels weird. I’m still wearing my clothes. And for some reason, this bed is very hard.”
I didn’t even have a pillow.
That made him laugh.
“It’s hard because you’re on the floor.” Giving me another kiss, he stroked my head. “If you open your eyes and sit up, I have some pain meds that will make your head feel better.”
Oh, if I hadn’t already loved him, that would’ve made me fall head over heels for my Daddy.
“Thank you, Daddy.” But as much as I wanted to be good, it took me a while to actually sit up and open my eyes. “Where am I?”
The room wasn’t familiar at all, but it was painted a bright yellow and there were toys and even a crib.
“Your bedroom at Austin’s house.” Daddy seemed to think that made perfect sense, but I must’ve looked confused because he explained more as he tried not to laugh. “He decided you needed a safe place here if you were finally going to come visit. They tried putting you in the crib last night but you were all too drunk.”
“Our plan worked?” Looking down, I realized I’d changed clothes at some point but I was dressed in my little clothes from my bag, so I thought that was pretty good.
“Yes.” Daddy was smiling but managed not to giggle. “It was a very good plan. Little Charlie kept his clothes on and didn’t kiss his friends and played nicely. You even colored.”
That was wonderful.
“Austin is going to be very pleased.” He was so smart.
For some reason that made Daddy frown. “I think so but right now he’s running around like mad and telling everyone they have to get clothes on. He says there’s a surprise that requires real clothes.”
Taking the water and the medicine from Daddy, I thought about what he’d said the night before. “I don’t remember anything about a surprise.”
Shrugging, Daddy took the empty glass and then my hand. “Well, unless you want to argue with him when he’s plotting, I’m going to suggest you get up and we put on the clothes he picked out for us.”
Daddy pointed to what seemed to be a closet door where two fancy suits hung.
I didn’t own a fancy suit.
What were we doing?
“Can I have breakfast first?” I sighed when Daddy shook his head.
“No, but I snuck you a donut from a stash in Austin’s kitchen and I might have a lead on coffee if you don’t ask too many questions.” Daddy looked like a spymaster from a scary movie.
“Deal.” Kissing his cheek, I let him help me up because I wasn’t sure I should trust my legs without assistance.
Alcohol out of a sippy cup was still alcohol.
I was going to have to remember that but, for the time being, I let Daddy help put me into my suit. My fancy suit. I looked like a very pretty penguin. “Aren’t these for nighttime?”
Daddy scoffed. “I was not going to argue with him.”
Because Daddy was smart.
“You look very nice, Daddy.” He looked just like a spy from the movies and that made me think of food and coffee. “But you’d look even prettier if I had coffee.”
He chuckled as he straightened my tie. “Come on. But you can’t tattle.”
Daddy had bribed the caterer.
I didn’t ask why there was a caterer, but after we’d finished hiding in a tiny bathroom at the back of the house, I decided it was probably time to ask Austin what was going on…if we could find him. That turned out to be easier than I’d expected because as we peeked around a corner, we saw him arguing with Bradley.
None of it made sense, though.
“You can’t blame me for that. I didn’t color your penis red. It’ll wash off.” Austin was glaring at Bradley, who was looking down the front of his pants. “Stop that. You look ridiculous.”
Oops.
Daddy managed not to giggle but it was a close call.
As we finished coming around the corner, we both looked wonderfully innocent and so pretty Austin had to stop glaring. “There you are. We’re all ready now. You look so cute.”
“Thank you.” Deciding to be sweet first, I kissed his cheek and gave him the wide eyes he’d taught me. “Daddy makes very good breakfasts. Can he help?”
We weren’t supposed to know about the caterers who were in the backyard, so I played dumb.
Austin scrunched up his face. “In just a few minutes, I promise. But we have one thing to do first.”
“What?” I looked down and did a little twirl. “I look so cute. Are we having a tea party?”
