And yet, he knew instinctively that Connelly was right. Tam was normally quiet, cautious even.

“What is it you do?” Connelly asked.

“A little bit of everything. Mostly bartending, but I’ve worked construction, served coffee, flipped burgers. Whatever it takes, wherever I am. You?”

“Detective.” His eyes were tracking Z’s progress through the group but he flicked a quick glance to Driver when he spoke.

“Figured it was something like that, with the way you were interrogating me.” Driver smiled so Connelly would know he was joking. “I bet you ran a background check on Harrison too, right?”

“On every resident,” he admitted. “Just don’t tell the boys. They’ll string me up.”

“Anyone I should keep an eye on while I’m here?” He didn’t like the idea there might be someone in the building who’d threaten Tam.

“There are a couple of guys on probation for minor shit, but nothing that stood out to me.”

Driver relaxed. His gaze caught and held Tam’s even while Tam continued to sway and dip to the pop number spilling from the speaker. There was no doubt in Driver’s mind Tam didn’t realize he was flirting. The way he’d swallowed the shot and now this? It was like Tam held a blinking sign that said: Open for Business.

He was such an odd mix of innocence and eroticism. Driver wasn’t strong enough to resist the temptation. Not with those eyes watching him from across the room and the exciting musical beat vibrating the very air.

He set his beer on the windowsill and gave in to their call.

Chapter Six

The second Driver gripped Tam’s hips and pulled him close, everything ignited. Colors seemed brighter, scents seemed stronger, and fuck if his cock didn’t thicken. He wasn’t much of a dancer, but he’d never turned down the chance, especially with someone who loved it as much as Tam. To Driver, dancing was a means to an end—the perfect introduction, an excuse to grind together in absolute physical seduction. He knew how to move his body, how to show it off.

Now that he was nearer, he recognized Tam’s fresh fragrance from earlier—a combination of sugar and detergent. It tickled his senses, reminding him how Tam had looked straight from the shower with water dripping down his bare chest.

Naked, naive Tam was just as beautiful as the one in his arms.

He lost track of how long they were out there, twisting around each other. Each barely there touch was featherlight, a tease that made him want to beg. He’d get down on his knees if he thought it’d make a difference. Except he was mesmerized by the way Tam fell into each song. He was lost in it, and Driver wanted to be lost too. Lost with Tam.

He didn’t even notice when the dance floor eventually cleared and they were the only two left standing.

One song led into another until he recognized Ariana’s voice.

As soon as she whispered the first words of “Into You,” Tam’s whole aura altered. His concentration changed. He was no longer simply dancing—he was creating.

Head snapping from side to side, Tam smoothed his hands up over Driver’s shoulders and swayed to Ariana’s breathy voice. He popped his shoulders to the snaps, and during the chorus he bent backward a second before spinning. It was glorious to watch, like seeing inside the mind of a genius scientist or watching every stroke of a famous painter.

This was art.

This was Tam.

The real one.

His deepest self, his strongest desires bared and open for everyone to see. Driver was sure of it. He moved with such elegance and confidence. All Driver could do was reach out for him, ready to catch the tiniest scrap. When Driver swayed, Tam shimmied. When Tam lunged, Driver held fast. A perfect, synchronized back and forth. Like a conversation through body movement. Every time they came together, Tam molded it into another moment in the masterpiece.

Ariana sang the chorus and Tam spun so his back was to Driver. Driver clutched his hips, held him close. Panting against Tam’s neck, they rocked as one, their bodies already so familiar. Then Tam twisted down and up again in a way meant to drive him wild.

It worked.

Driver touched him. He couldn’t not touch him. It was electric. His heartbeat came fast and he didn’t even care that all the oxygen was being sucked from his lungs. It was replaced with Tam. That was all the mattered.

When he cupped Tam’s shoulder, Tam spun into the caress, bending back until Driver caught him. As he rose, he hooked a leg around Driver’s hips and ground his pelvis in sexy thrusts.

And Driver almost combusted.

Instead, he grabbed Tam’s ass to keep him right there. Just a minute more of that—fuck, he’d be set for the rest of his fucking life. Their gazes clashed, and for barely a beat, Tam’s daze cleared. Everything stopped except the warm puffs of breath that fanned Driver’s lips. They smelled like watermelon and they made Driver hungry.
