“It’s fine, but is Tanner still with you? He hasn’t come back yet.”

“No, he left straight away,” she says. “He should be there by now.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah, don’t stress. He’s probably just getting some fresh air or calling Coach Wyld. He said something about needing to give him some updates.”

“Yeah, probably,” I say, shrugging it off. “Listen, I’m calling because Jax just woke up.”

“No way,” she breathes as I hear her dog barking in the background. “How is he? Was he alright? Is he in pain?”

“I don’t know,” I tell her, feeling like an idiot for not getting those answers before rushing to call her. “Logan just came out here screaming about him being awake and then threatened to kill him and ran back. Didn’t actually tell us anything about how he was, but I’m assuming he’s okay, otherwise Logan wouldn’t have come out.”

“Good point,” she says before the barking gets louder. “No, Daisy. No, get down—ahhhh, fuck, ya big bastard.” The alarm blares to life, wailing through the phone as I hear Arizona calling after the dog again. “Shit, DAISY, COME BACK!”

There’s loud rustling through the phone before I hear Arizona panting down the line. “I have to go,” she calls over the noise of the alarm. “If you speak to Jax, let him know I’m going to kick him in the balls when I see him next, and don’t, under any circumstances, let him know I was a wreck during his surgery. Let him think I went home and slept like a baby.”

I roll my eyes, but she’s gone before I can get a response out, and as I slip my phone back into my pocket and glance up at my friends, I find them all getting to their feet, packing up their shit. “What’s going on?” I question. “Are we going somewhere?”

Addison rubs her eyes. “Yeah, the nurses caved and said we could go see Jax, but I think they just wanted us out of their waiting room.”

Excitement drums through my veins and I glance back at the door, certain Tanner should have come through it by now. “Okay, I’ll just go find Tanner and meet you there.”

She nods and as one, they all take off down the hall. Knowing we probably won’t come back here, I scoop up Tanner’s things he left on the seat and stride to the exit, wondering where the fuck he could have gotten too.

I walk out through the automatic doors and out to the hospital parking lot before stopping and quickly scanning, trying to remember where the hell we parked. We were in such a rush that the finer details of our night quickly escaped my mind. Luckily, there aren’t too many cars here tonight, and it doesn’t take long to find the tail end of Tanner’s Mustang.

As I make my way toward it, slipping through the other parked cars, I hear Tanner’s muffled voice from the other side of the Mustang. I pause, not liking the sound of it. “Come on, man. Don’t be fucking stupid,” Tanner says, a strange hesitation in his tone. “It’s not worth it.”

“Oh, I think it is,” a voice says, pulling at something inside me. There’s a strange familiarity with the voice, though I can’t figure out where the hell I’ve heard it before. “You see, maybe you could have persuaded me, but then you went and fucked up my boy, and now you leave me no fucking choice. An eye for a fucking eye.”

A chill sails down my spine as goosebumps spread across my skin. Something warns me to keep quiet, that whatever is going on isn’t something I should be involved in. I should tuck and run, but not when Tanner is involved.

I hold my breath, my heart racing erratically in my chest as I slip through the parked cars, walking on my toes to keep as quiet as possible.

The closer I get, the clearer their voices become. “An eye for an eye?” Tanner scoffs. “Man, it’s too fucking late for that. He raped my sister, attacked her in hospital, then tried it all over again at the track. Should I go on?” he demands. “Because there’s a whole fucking list of people he’s hurt.”

“You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about,” the voice says. “From what I heard, your sister is a fucking whore. She wanted it. He was doing her a favor.”

My blood runs cold, and I cut through the cars a little faster, not knowing what kind of position Tanner is in, but the fact I haven’t heard this guy getting the shit beat out of him yet is challenging everything I know about Tanner.

I reach the back of the Mustang and creep up beside it before having to slam my hand over my mouth to keep me from making a damn sound, seeing my whole world about to crumble. Tanner stands in the vacant parking space in front of the Mustang, his eyes locked on Roxten Hargrove, Colby’s best friend.
