“Stop panicking. Just call Dana and ask her to come back with some cocktail dresses for you to choose from.”

I began to shake my head, but he stopped me with a stern raised finger.

“I have to attend Peter’s pre-wedding party, but it will be a working weekend so I’m picking up the bill.”

My shoulders slumped. No real point in trying to argue with him. The undeniable fact was I didn’t have anything suitable to wear to a society party, and the last thing I wanted to do was make a fool of myself by looking like I belonged in Max’s front office and not on his arm.

“So we’re going to drive down to Connecticut?”

“That’s the plan.”

“What time do we leave?”

“2.00 p.m.”

The next morning after an invigorating run and a delicious fifteen minutes in the shower together, I went downstairs to find Dana was back with a whole rack of gorgeous dresses she thought would suit me. Max was right, she did have an excellent fashion sense.

It was difficult, but I finally decided on an elegant off-the-shoulder black silk dress. It reminded me of Lady Diana’s ‘revenge dress’. Form-fitting and sexy, but in a classy way. Paired with the necklace Max had given me it would be the perfect look for a high-society function. Dana had also picked out a pair of matching crocodile skin high heels to complete the outfit.

After a quick lunch, Max’s driver took me home so I could pack the rest of my stuff. It didn’t take me long to get a small suitcase ready since it was only for one night. The plan was to be back by Sunday.

I was looking forward to the hour or so that Max and I would be alone in the car. There was something romantic and thrilling about being on a road trip with someone you fancied.

A whole hour of no interruptions, just me and Max.

I knew I was making the weekend out to be more than it was, and Max would be horrified if he knew, but I couldn’t help the excitement building up over the trip.

True, I was nervous about sleeping in his parents’ house, but Max had assured me his parents would have no problem with him bringing someone. Besides, there would be other guests staying overnight too. It didn’t make me feel any better, but it did make me wonder how many women he had taken home for a weekend. I quickly stopped that thought, knowing I was only inflicting unnecessary pain on myself.

Rather than have Max come up, I made my way downstairs to wait for him a few minutes before we agreed to meet. I smiled when I spotted his car turning the corner. I loved that Max was a stickler for time, something we had in common.

He brought the car to a stop and slid out. He looked casually sexy in a white button-down shirt and chino pants. Like he’d stepped out of a magazine page.

“Nice outfit,” he complimented, eyeing me up and down.

“This old thing,” I said laughing and gesturing at the summer dress I had once, in the days before my mom got into financial troubles, spent nearly a quarter of my salary on. It was playful with a bow at the chest and it came up to my knees, showing off my legs.

Max drew me into his arms and ran hot kisses along my neck that made tingles run up my spine.

“You’re a tease, Mr. Frost,” I complained when he withdrew.

“That makes two of us,” he said with a chuckle, as he took my bag and tossed it in the back seat. “Don’t think I’ve forgotten that day when you came dressed to kill and told me, I could look but not touch.”

“As if that ever stopped you,” I shot back with a laugh and entered the car.

Sitting on his desk and opening my legs wide to show him my naked sex had been the most daring thing I’d ever done in my life, but it had been completely worth it.

Max entered the car, his scent dancing in the air. I sneaked a glance at him and met his gaze, which sent an electric current sizzling through me.

“Nothing stops me when I want something.” Then he frowned suddenly and all the good feelings inside me evaporated.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“Just someone walking over my grave,” he said and smiled, but this time his smile didn’t reach his eyes.

We drove in silence for a while.

“I’ve been thinking maybe I should sleep in a hotel?” I blurted out.

Max glanced at me. “Why?”

“I think your mother would appreciate it more.”

He shook his head cynically. “Then you don’t know my mother. She’d be horrified. How dare you behave as if her home is not good enough for you?”

“Oh, I never thought about it like that.”

“Like I said, leave my mother to me. Besides, the whole point of taking you with me is to have you in my bed.”
