“You're lying. Nick told me everything. He slept with you, once. Everyone has an off day. He wore a condom and didn’t come. Seems you were the one that was off.” I throw back at her, trying but failing to hide my own triumph when she turns and shoots daggers at me before she covers it.

“I know you think you have won something, but this is just his M.O. hon. This is what he does. He makes you believe you mean something to him and then when shit gets real he leaves. The fact of the matter is we were a thing for longer than he knew you were alive. We broke up, of course. He needs time to sow his oats, but he always comes back to me. And now that I am having his baby, there is no getting rid of me.” She sounds so confident, but I am fighting the doubt creeping in.

“Whatever. He told me how desperate you are to get his attention. I mean I get it. Most guys fall over themselves for a little regard from you, just because of your family name, but Nick, he prefers a woman of substance and class.” That hit home. Her back straightens and she walks briskly to my face.

“Listen bitch, I don’t know what you think is going on between the two of you, but he loves me. I have proof.” She slams something on the counter, and I see it is a cell phone.

“Oh cute. Your phone is bedazzled,” I comment, rolling my eyes. She sighs and opens it up. Shoving it into my face, I see a message about meeting later and I am not sure what else it says because I back up. “That proves nothing. For all I know it could be from anyone.” My baby doesn’t like this conversation any more than me. My stomach is beginning to roll, and I swear throwing up on her would be amazing, but the weakness in my knees is not. If I don’t find a way to dispel this feeling of my heart splintering in millions of pieces.

“Look.” She grabs my hand and smacks her phone into it. Reluctantly and against my better judgment, I look at the text messages and notice the phone number belongs to him. The messages before me go back six months. Plans for dinner. My knees begin to give out. Out of town vacations together with pics attached. I can taste the bile as it rises. The declarations of love are frequent and hard to miss. Every word he said to me is a lie. The photos of her ultrasound and his elation at their ‘new bundle’ is the end of what I can take. Everything is spinning. I can’t see and I can’t breathe.

Hands braced on the counter; I try to maintain my composure, but I am barely hanging on. “I don’t know what your game is, but you are not supposed to be here. Get… get out now before I call the police.” I struggle getting the words, but I don't move from my spot until her cackling, horrid self is gone but not before spouting her parting shot.

“Sorry to shatter your dreams of a happy home, but I am the prize. Don’t trip running out the door,” she says, before there is silence. If I wasn’t seconds from falling over I would slap her makeup caked face. The minute the door closes I bow my head over the sink and throw up every word I read. Every sniff of her perfume. Every audible of her fake Hollywood accent. Every tap of her nail against the phone. And every fucking lie from his no-good mouth.

Once my mouth is rinsed out, I race around the house putting what little stuff I have in a bag before turning, ordering an uber and calling Sassy. “Rose. What’s up?” she asks. I can hear her finger clicking on her keyboard.

“I need somewhere to lay low, and I need you to keep a secret. Even from Bolton. Can you do that?”

“Absolutely. You know the address of the air BnB I am staying at, right?”

“Yes.”

“Then go there. I will be there soon. Are you alright?”

“No.” I answer honestly, crying into the phone. Sobbing, allowing the ripple effect through the universe to surround me.

“Oh sweetie. I’m on my way home.”

Yeah. I thought I was home.

CHAPTER 14

I leave practice, beyond ready to get home to my woman. All I can think about is sliding into her pussy. My favorite place. She makes me want to be a better man. The drive is longer than I’d like. As soon as I pull into my driveway, I see a sleek black Range Rover that I know isn’t Roses. I groan when I see the vanity plate. Honey69. Fuck. I throw the car into park and storm into my house. I find Honey laying on my couch, eating my leftover Chinese food and Rose nowhere to be found.
