Which means I really need to get the freaking vessel to Osiris.

I take another bite of my taco and set the plate down on the table in the foyer. Binx and Pandora shadow behind me, and Scarlet is slowly creeping through the house.

“For the sake of our former friendship,” Lucas starts, working hard to keep his voice level. “I will allow you safe passage to get the fuck off my property before I rip your motherfucking heart out one piece at a time so you can see me drink your blood before you cease to exist.”

“Oh, I’ve missed you.” Eamon chuckles and looks at me. “Never would I have thought to do that to a fellow vampire, but it was your dear husband’s preferred way of dealing with anyone he didn’t like. What was that other thing you used to do?” Eamon tips his head as if he actually has to think about it. “Ah, yes! The removal of teeth. For both vampire and human alike. Tell me, Callie, do you know what it feels like to rip a humans’ incisors out?”

“No,” I start, moving next to Lucas, and out of the corner of my eye, I see him start to smirk. “But I do know what it feels like to telekinetically pull someone’s molars out. It feels good, by the way.”

Eamon wasn’t expecting that and his face falls for just a split second. “Listen,” he tries again. “I am not here to stir up trouble. As you know, humans have not been kind to either of us throughout history. And there are many on both sides who will object to this union. It’s high time the Vampire Council and the Grand Coven come together, like the old days.”

Holy shit. Eamon might be the last surviving vampire from that long ago, back when vampires and witches did get along. Unable to hold witches spellbound, vampires worked with us instead of against us. They offered protection against witch hunters in exchange for spells, but eventually they got jealous. We could hide who we were and could walk in the light and live in the dark. The jealousy sparked many battles which eventually led to the War of Light and Dark. My ancestor, Marie Lancaster, was given power by my father to wipe out almost every vampire in the army fighting the witches.

“Whatever dick-measuring competition you’re into with the humans, leave us the fuck out of it,” Lucas sneers.

Eamon pushes his blonde hair back, laughing in a way that shows off his fangs. “See, this is what I can’t quite figure out...your sudden, deep affection for humanity. Then again, you can imagine my shock when I discovered you have a biological child.”

Lucas tenses and inches closer, fingers slowly closing into fists.

“Cute kid,” Eamon goes on with a smile. “Juliet is such a classic name. I am curious what the VC would say about this. Vampires are not supposed to have biological children. It would have to be the result of some sort of powerful magic, which the Grand Coven would most definitely look into.”

Lucas snaps and lunges forward, grabbing Eamon by the throat, moving so fast he knocks him off the porch. They land hard on the cobblestone path, and Eamon’s head smacks against it with a sickening thud. Lucas goes right in for the kill and bites Eamon’s throat, pulling his head back and tearing his flesh. Blood drips down his mouth and he leans back, grabbing Eamon’s head. He snaps his neck with one quick jerk of his hands.

That all transpired in just seconds and I’m left standing in the doorway, watching my husband brutally murder someone. Only, Eamon is already dead and none of those wounds are fatal. Growling, Lucas straightens up and wipes his mouth with the back of his hand.

“No one threatens our family and gets away with it.”

Shaking myself, I step onto the porch towards Lucas, but something catches my eye. A dark shape moves along the trees, pausing right outside the first warding.

“There’s something—”

“I know.” Lucas comes up onto the porch with me, and right as I mentally call for my familiars, Eamon springs up and jumps onto the porch, grabbing one of the spindles of the railing. He yanks it out of place with the sound of splintering wood and raises it, going to stab Lucas in the heart.

Lucas dodges out of the way and I throw an energy ball at Eamon, hitting him square in the chest.

“This house is historic!” I shout and thrust both hands forward, sending another shockwave of magic at him. “We just had the porch restored!”

Eamon’s body convulses from the magic sizzling through him, making him drop the spindle.

“You are so paying for that, asshole.” Lucas comes back to me again, trying to get me in the house. Eamon won’t be able to come in but whatever is in the woods just crossed the first warding without setting it off.
