I’m shaking, feeling almost like I’m going to pass out. I sink down onto Lucas, my cries of pleasure muffled against Lucas’s arm. He bites me again as a deep guttural growl comes from him, and he bucks his hips, pulling me down onto him, drinking my blood as he comes inside me, pushing in balls deep.

Letting out a breath, I collapse against him and he slowly moves his head back, licking up the blood on my neck before slowly pulling his mouth away. He grabs my wrist and brings my hand to my neck, putting my own fingers over two of the puncture wounds while he applies pressure to the others. I’m panting, heart racing and head spinning.

“Breathe, my love,” Lucas says and brushes my hair back. “And move slowly. I haven’t had that much of your blood in months.”

“Okay,” I pant, remembering the first time I felt a little weak after he drank my blood. It surprised us both how quickly I recovered, as we didn’t know my true nature at the time. Being a nephilim allows this to work, and with the exception of being pregnant, I fucking love that I’m the only one Lucas feeds from.

“What were you trying to say?” Lucas brushes my hair back and kisses my forehead. I’m still straddling him and his cock is still in me.

“I can’t help it.” I tip my head up, slitting my eyes open to smile at him. “Even if I tried not to come, you’d still make me.”

“I would. And I did.”

So many questions flood my brain but I ignore them, wanting to enjoy being with Lucas. Because I know, deep down, our time is fleeting. He’s here now, and that’s what matters.

Once the wounds on my neck start to clot, Lucas lays back, bringing me down with him. He moves to my side, spooning his body around mine.

“I knew you would come for me,” he whispers and kisses the back of my neck. “What did you have to do to find your way to the Underworld?”

“I killed a genie, broke into the Order’s warehouse, and figured out what the oracle was. Not necessarily in that order though.”

Lucas kisses me again and my questions burn on my lips. I close my eyes, pushing back my tears. The breeze picks up again and I spin in Lucas’s arms.

“Let’s go see our daughter.”

Chapter

Twenty-Six

Lucas takes my hand, pulling me to my feet. I melt against him, wrapping my arms around his neck. Tears fill my eyes and I don’t attempt to stop them.

“Don’t cry, my love,” he says gently and wipes a tear away.

“I’m scared this isn’t real.” My voice is high pitched and tight, and I bury my face against Lucas’s firm chest. He holds me tight and slowly ranks his fingers through my hair, giving me a moment. “I don’t want to lose you again.” My words come out strangled, mixed with sobs. “I don’t even understand how you’re here.”

Lucas cups my face with his large hands, tipping my head up. He kisses me, lips pressing against mine for a long moment before he rests his forehead against mine. “Osiris wants you to know he meant what he said.”

“Are you free?” I swallow back a sob and look at Lucas with hope.

“No.”

My bottom lip trembles as I try not to cry. Lucas holds me for another moment and then picks up my shirt. He put his own clothes back on as I get dressed. I wipe away my tears once again.

“Osiris said the horses need a rider.”

“They do,” Lucas says and holds out his arm. There’s a weird veiny-looking tattoo on the inside of his wrist that I didn’t notice before. “When it’s time, I must go back.”

“What if you just don’t.”

“It was verbal agreement,” he says, and I know he means that some sort of deal was made. I’m getting really fucking tired of all these deals with stupid terms and unsigned contracts. “And we all know what will happen if the demon escapes. I was the one who killed Famine.”

“What happened when you got on the horse?” I ask slowly. “You…you didn’t look like you anymore.” Tears fill my eyes again and I look Lucas up and down. It’s him, inside and out.

“I don’t really know,” Lucas tells me. “I remember feeling the demon’s intentions and I wanted them to be mine too. And then I saw you, right before we went to the Underworld and I vowed never to let the demon go free.” He casts his eyes down. “Our daughter will not grow up in an apocalyptic world. I promised you both that.”

“She’s not going to grow up with you in the Underworld either. You’re coming back to us—for good.”

Lucas just nods and pulls me to him again. Fuck, it feels so good to be up against him again. My old coping mechanisms—or lack thereof—threaten to come back and I want to push all thoughts and talk of the Underworld away, not worrying about them until we absolutely have to.
