I licked my dry lips. Blink grunted and moved his hand, grabbing a cup with a straw from the table beside the hospital bed. He placed the straw at my lips. “Slow,” he murmured.
I sucked some of the water down before turning my head. He set the cup back on the table, and then immediately after, his hand was back on my cheek, his thumb stroking over my skin. My eyelids fluttered; it felt so good to have him touching me. “What happened?” I croaked.
He frowned. “The doctor said you might’ve lost some of your memory.” He blew out a soft breath. “You were in a bad accident, Lindsey. Totaled your car. You’re so damn lucky you survived.” He shook his head, pain flitting over his expression. Agony coated his eyes, breaking my heart. “I thought I’d lost you.”
I frowned and looked over my body. I had bandages in some places, and my head definitely hurt. “How long was I out?” I asked him.
“Couple of days.” He cleared his throat, that agony in his gaze only deepening. My heart ached for him. “Longest two fucking days of my life.”
I slid my hand over so my fingers brushed his jean-clad thigh. “How did I get in an accident?” I asked him.
He clenched his jaw, that pain in his eyes blazing into red-hot rage. “Judging by the damage to your rear end, someone hit you. On purpose.” He worked his jaw around, trying to keep his temper at bay. “We’re working on finding who did this to you, but it’s tricky. Fucking pigs,” he grunted, referring to the local law enforcement agency.
Before he could say another word, a light knock sounded on the door. Blink sighed and walked over to it, opening it up. A man in a pair of khakis and a polo with a white doctor’s jacket strode into the room, a nurse in butterfly scrubs right behind him. Blink shut the door again and came right back to my side.
“I’m glad to see you’re finally awake,” the doctor said, smiling kindly at me before looking at Blink. “You should’ve gotten a nurse immediately when she woke.”
Blink just shrugged. His fingers slid between mine. He didn’t clasp my hand—just let them rest together. It settled me, which I definitely needed after learning I’d been in a terrible accident that probably should’ve killed me. I didn’t even remember it. Hell, the last thing I remembered was feeling sick.
“I’m Dr. Sheffield. I’ve been in charge of your care since you’ve been admitted. How do you feel, Lindsey?” the doctor asked, turning his attention to me.
“Like shit,” I told him honestly, my voice a little croaky. “Everything hurts.”
He hummed. “That’s to be given. You had to have twelve stitches in your head, you’ve broken your ankle, two ribs, and fractured your femur. You’ve got stitches in numerous places on your body.” Good fucking Lord. “I’ve given you the recommended pain medication for someone in your predicament; I, unfortunately, cannot give you more.”
I frowned, my mind stuck on the last part of what he said. “My predicament?” I asked.
This time, the doctor frowned at me. He lowered his clipboard, his brows furrowing. “Lindsey, what’s the last thing you remember?”
I glanced at Blink. He was watching the doctor, but sensing my gaze on him, he brushed his thumb over my hand. I looked back at Dr. Sheffield. “Um, being sick,” I told him.
He looked at Blink. “How many days ago was that, Blink?”
Blink grunted. “Three.” He looked down at me with a soft sigh. “A pregnancy test was found in your car—a positive one.” My eyes widened in surprise—and a little bit of horror. A pregnancy test? I hadn’t taken a pregnancy test, had I? “You don’t remember taking a pregnancy test, Lindsey?”
“No,” I croaked, tears filling my eyes. My heart rate kicked up speed on the heart monitor. My lips trembled. “Am I—”
Blink nodded, linking his fingers with mine now, giving them a very gentle squeeze. “You’re pregnant, darlin’.”
I choked on a sob, my body wracking with pain as tears slid down my cheeks. Immediately, Blink squeezed onto the bed beside me and drew me into his arms. The doctor cleared his throat. “We’ll come back in an hour,” he said softly.
Was I going to lose Blink? Was he going to toss me aside now that there was a baby in the picture? I knew bringing a baby into our world was dangerous and a poor decision. And if he did toss me aside, what was I going to do? What was Eric going to do?
I heard the door click shut behind the doctor and the nurse a moment later. Blink gently ran his hand over my hair, silencing my rambling thoughts. “It’s okay, darlin’. I promise, it’s all going to be okay,” he soothed. “I’m not walking away. We’re going to figure this out.” He tipped my chin up and brushed his smooth lips over my chapped ones. Then, he kissed away some tears off my cheeks so gently, it was like a feather caressing my skin. “Just breathe.”
