Vas wore the same suit he’d had on the day of the hearing, but now it was rumpled and unwashed. Even so he was the handsomest man I’d ever laid eyes on.

“You’re even more beautiful than I’ve been imagining in my head all these months,” he said and I flushed, stepping close to him.

“Vas,” I whispered, feeling so much that I didn’t know how to express. I’d been looking forward to this moment for a year and now I was messing it all up. He smiled, his devilishly handsome eyes soaking me in. Then, inexplicably, tears started to leak. I was crying and making a holy show of myself. Vas swept me up into his arms, his hard body melding to mine as he held me tight. I squished my face into the crook of his neck, drying my tears on his shirt and inhaling his familiar scent.

“This dress,” he murmured, pressing a kiss to my temple. Through the mark I could feel his need. Desire rolled over me in waves. “Are you trying to fucking kill me?”

“Carra chose it,” I replied. “She wanted us both to look nice.”

He ran his finger over the edge of the fabric and my breath hitched. “It’s yellow.”

“I know. I never thought yellow would be my colour but somehow it works.”

Vas leaned closer, his mouth coming to my ear. “You look like summer.”

“Well, it is summer,” I replied stupidly.

His fingers dug into my hip and I had to press my thighs together to ease the need that sprang forth. “I’ve spent months fantasising about that bath,” he went on.

An image of the two of us naked in the bath of some rich Oreylian family’s house filled my head. I’d wanted him then, more than I’d been ready to admit at the time. Heat swirled in my lower belly. “I should fuck you right here on this pier, scandalise the prison guards.”

“God, Vas, stop.”

“I love it when you blush.” His hand swept down my spine, coming to rest on my lower back.

“So how are we getting out of here?” Sven called, interrupting the erotic bubble we’d fallen into. He and Carra had walked a few yards ahead of us.

I drew away from Vas, running my hands down my dress and trying to find some calm. His words had me all hot and bothered. “My car is parked nearby,” I replied, glancing back at Vas and motioning for him to follow me. I felt him just behind, his keen focus making the hairs on the back of my neck tingle.

“How have things come along in the forest?” he asked, making more normal conversation.

I glanced at him. He had his hands clasped behind his back, like he didn’t trust himself not to touch me. “Things have come along great. I can’t wait to show you my house. Carra and I have also been looking at nearby sections of land where you and Sven can build if that’s something you’re interested in. For now you’re welcome to stay with me. We’ve made up two of the spare bedrooms.”

His hand swept across the back of my neck. I was a little sweaty from the summer heat and his fingers pressed in, making me tremble. “If you think I’m sleeping anywhere other than your bed you’re sorely mistaken.”

I ran my tongue across my lips and his eyes followed the motion. “Well, you’ve been gone a long time and I just thought maybe we should take things slow.”

He came to stand in front of me, stopping me mid-stride. His hand still clutched my neck as he tilted his head. “Slow?”

I swallowed thickly. “It’s rarely wise to rush.”

He leaned in close, whispering his lips over mine and causing a flood of wetness between my thighs. I was so turned on it was almost painful. “I’m going to have you spread out and moaning my name at the nearest opportunity. If that’s rushing, then yes, I plan to rush.” He paused, trailing a finger down the centre of my chest. “But I also plan to savour.”

We were almost to my car and I didn’t think I was capable of moving my legs, never mind driving. “Carra and I prepared a meal,” I managed, a weak effort at changing the subject. “I’m sure you’ve been longing for something homemade after all that prison food.”

“I’m longing for something else more.”

I pressed a hand to his chest. “Vas, please.”

He grinned, pressing another kiss to my lips. This one lingered and sent tingles shooting all the way down to my toes. He reached for my hand and laced his fingers with mine. “Come on. Let’s go see this house of yours.”

When we got to the car, Sven and Carra sat in the back while Vas took the front passenger seat. As soon as I pulled out of the parking spot Vas placed his hand on my bare knee, his thumb brushing back and forth over a sensitive spot. I had trouble concentrating on the road.
