All my love,

Vas.

Dear Vas,

I’m writing with good news! Carra has woken from her coma. She’s been a little out of sorts but otherwise she’s in good health. When I told her about yours and Sven’s prison sentences she was upset but I reassured her that the time would fly. I get the feeling she’s eager to see Sven. You never did tell me what’s between them…

I’ve been making good headway on my house. It should be finished in another month and then Carra’s going to move in with me. She enjoys the forest so I think she’ll like living here. It’s also a bonus for me because I don’t fancy living on my own just yet.

I miss you.

Love,

Darya.

Darya,

I’m glad to hear Carra’s awake and doing well. Sven hasn’t stopped smiling since I informed him of her recovery. As regards their relationship, that’s their business. Not that Sven ever speaks much of his feelings. It’s like getting juice from a crater.

Today I had a run in with your old friend, Mack. You’d barely recognise her. She’s a ghost of her former self. She lost her sway with the prisoners and the vampires have started following someone else now. I have a feeling it might be your father’s doing. Did you mention to him how Mack treated you while you were here?

Other than that my days are monotonous. I spend my time thinking of you. Can you feel me through the mark?

All my love,

Vas.

Dear Vas,

I honestly can’t imagine Sven smiling like you described. It’s a little disturbing. He’s just not a smiler.

And yes, I did tell my dad about Mack. I hadn’t wanted to but he wrangled it out of me. Is it terrible that I don’t feel bad? She would’ve killed me if she had the chance.

Have I mentioned how much the community is growing in the forest? I can’t believe it. Some people are even leaving the city to come settle with us here. Ren, his grandmother and little Demi have decided to make the move, too. They’re building a house on a plot of land close to mine so they’ll be my new neighbours. Ren’s going to become a Founder like me and help the Oreylians settle into their new homes. It’s still so weird that people look to me for guidance but I’m slowly finding my feet. Onwards and upwards, as they say.

To answer your other question, yes, I can feel you through the mark. I think of you all the time, too. Can you feel me? I wish I could just put the days on fast forward and speed things up.

Love,

Darya.

P.S. The saying is ‘blood from a rock’ not ‘juice from a crater.’ That sounds a little perverted.

Darya,

You know me, dirty mind. Thanks for the laugh. I need it in here.

I’m happy things are working out in the forest. I can’t wait to see all that you’ve built. I’m in awe of you. You’re what keeps me going. I can feel it when you think of me. It makes my mind wander, though I won’t scandal you with the details. I’ll save them for when I see you in person.

All my love,

Vas.

Dear Vas,

Guess I’ll just have to be patient then.

Today we finally completed our last building project. We’ve decided to call the community Yellowbranch and I’ve commissioned a stone place name to be constructed and put up outside the community centre. My mother, Rita and Roman created a glamour so that everything would remain hidden from human eyes. I’m so proud of how far we’ve come. Ren and I have even started a program so that we can farm our own food, so in time we might be self-sustaining.

The demon gargoyle you freed on the night of the Star Festival has become something of a friend of mine. Well, an unconventional friend. She keeps leaving dead rabbits outside my house. I think they might be her version of gifts. She doesn’t come very close but I often see her flying nearby, like she’s watching out for me. I think she wants to know where you are. Maybe the gifts are for you and she’s just waiting for you to return.

Grace and my sister, Rebecca, have been coming to visit often. I don’t think I’ve regaled you with their story yet. Grace had a crush on my sister for years and only recently revealed her true feelings. Rebecca was seeing someone at the time so it wasn’t an ideal situation for Grace to profess her love. Anyway, a few weeks later Rebecca broke things off with her girlfriend but after that it was radio silence. Grace mentioned nothing of what transpired between them but I suspected they’d been conducting a clandestine affair. I’d been too busy in Yellowbranch to invest much time quizzing them but just a few weeks ago they finally announced to our families that they’re officially together. I couldn’t be happier for them but seeing them together just makes me miss you so much more.
