“No, she definitely isn’t,” I say in disbelief, once again thinking about last night. “Sure, I’ll take her to the school. Which college is it?”

“Fields University. I already have a hotel booked near the college, so you guys can make a weekend of it. I figure it would be nice for you to spend some time with your goddaughter before she graduates and runs far away from all parental figures,” he chuckles.

“Parental figures?” I ask, feeling my eyebrows furrow as I wonder what he means exactly.

“Aside from me, you’re the only person who’s been in Renee’s life since she was a baby. My parents live too far away to really have an influence on her. I can never repay you for all of the support you’ve given me over the years.”

Rubbing the bridge of my nose, I listen as Colt gushes over how great of a friend and godfather I’ve been. It all makes me feel like total shit.

“Colt, you’re like a brother to me. I’ll always be there for you and Renee, even if she runs far away from us after high school.”

“I worry about her, man,” Colt sighs heavily. “She has a rebel’s heart.”

“That’s what I’ve always loved about her, though,” I laugh. “That girl always marches to the beat of her own drum.”

“Yeah, but I’m afraid she’ll get herself into bigger trouble than detention once she enters the real world. I don’t want her meeting some asshole bad boy who will break her heart. I don’t want her to do crazy things just because she’s curious or seeking some kind of thrill…”

Hearing the sincere worry in Colt’s voice breaks my heart a little. I understand how he feels, but I think he’s underestimating Renee.

“Colt, you’re going to have to trust her. Renee may be rebellious and a little wild, but she’s smart and tough. You did a great job raising her. Don’t forget that.”

“Thanks, buddy. I needed to hear that. Thank you again for giving up next weekend for me.”

“It’s my pleasure. I’m looking forward to it.”

The fact is, I’m looking forward to next weekend way more than I should. But I know I can’t have sex with Renee again—that act has to be a one-time thing. At the same time, one time doesn’t seem like enough.

My mind flip-flops back and forth from doing right by Cole to doing right by my desires. Either way, it’s going to be a long weekend.

The duffle bag I have packed for the weekend is overstuffed with clothes simply because I can’t decide what to wear or what is needed exactly. I set the bag by the door and plop down on the couch in the sitting room, waiting nervously for Kane to pick me up.

The jitters I’m feeling are an intense mixture of fear and excitement, with an unsettled pit sitting in my stomach. This will be the first time I’ve seen Kane since I seduced him over a week ago.

He hasn’t reached out to me, either to talk about our brief but fantastic encounter or to attempt to get his journal back. I have no idea what kind of mood he’ll be in when he pulls into my driveway, and that uncertainty drives me crazy with anxiety.

He might be pissed as all hell. Or maybe he’ll want to drag me into the backseat of his car and have another go at it. The latter thought is what keeps me sane and eager, both at the same time. A horn beeps, scaring the shit out of me.

Standing up, I smooth my hands over the new blazer Daddy bought me specifically for this college tour. It’s more conservative and professional than the rest of my clothes. If my father’s goal is to hide my breasts, he failed. The blazer just accentuates my hourglass figure.

Grabbing my duffle bag, I step out of the house to see the familiar red Mustang waiting in the driveway. Kane is leaning against the car with his arms folded. Sunglasses hide his eyes, making it impossible to gage his expression.

After locking the door, I turn around to see Kane popping the trunk. The ten-foot walk over to him might as well be a mile as my nerves tear me up inside.

“You look nice,” he says.

“Thanks,” I smile as he takes my bag from me and puts it in the trunk.

“How much did you stuff in here?” He motions to the bag.

I laugh and shrug my shoulders.

“I didn’t know what to bring.”

“Are you nervous about visiting your first college?”

He shuts the trunk and lifts up his sunglasses to look at me. His gorgeous crystal blue eyes distract me for a moment.

“I don’t know,” I laugh. “I doubt I’ll be going to Fields, if I even get in. I’m more nervous about being alone with you.”

Kane looks stunned.

“What? Now you don’t want to be around me?”
