Thank goodness she was free of him.

“One healthy salad with dressing on the side,” Garrett announced as he reentered the shop.

“Let me get my purse, I’ll pay you back.”

“Nope. Not happening. It’s the least I can do to thank you for letting Ellie sleep in this morning. Sit and eat,” he directed in a serious tone that had Sue moving to follow his directions.

Left alone to eat her salad, Sue closed her eyes and sent a silent wish into the world. Please, let me find someone who loves me for me. She didn’t ask for a Daddy. That seemed like way too much to request. Not everyone could find that special relationship.

She glanced out the window across the parking lot to where the gym waited. Maybe she should call and cancel her assessment appointment. Sue wasn’t really gym material. She hated to waste Davis’s time.

Deciding to grab her phone after eating to take care of it, Sue enjoyed her salad. It was a delicious treat. Ellie paid well but not enough to allow her to cover her mortgage and eat out. Troy hadn’t wanted her to work while they were married. Ellie had given her a job even with a resume that featured a huge gap in employment. Sue had always been a hard worker, but she was dedicated to Ellie for giving her a chance.

As she stood to put the container in the trash, the door jingled and a line of customers walked into the bakery. Sue loved to see them stop and inhale the wonderful scent that filled the space. As they chattered amongst themselves about all the flavors, Sue washed her hands and pulled on gloves.

Phone calls can wait until later.

Chapter Three

When Riley came in to take over, Sue eyed the display case. Ellie always allowed them to take a cupcake after their shift. She remembered the half cupcake she’d tried earlier and decided not to add another slew of delicious calories to her hips.

“Got big plans?” Riley asked as she checked to see if she needed to restock the display. “I don’t know why I even look. You always have everything in optimal shape.”

“Just trying to make life easier for you. Believe it or not, I’m off to the gym,” Sue announced, knowing that would make her go.

“Good for you. Exercise releases all those endorphins. They say it’s better than great sex,” Riley shared.

“I wouldn’t know what that is,” Sue groused before realizing just how much she’d revealed.

“Men,” Riley bemoaned before adding, “We need to find you one that knows what he’s doing. I was lucky to find one. They’re out there. You could come to Blaze some night with us. There are some great guys there.”

“I’m not sure I’m ready for a new relationship yet.” Sue hesitated before adding, “I am really intrigued by the club though. I’ve never been to one.”

“Then that settles it. Ellie, Lark, Daisy, Tori, and I will all go with you.”

“I’d like that,” Sue smiled. She couldn’t be nervous with all those wonderful women with her. Well, I will be, but I can hide in the crowd.

“I’ll take care of it. How about Saturday night?”

“Sounds good. You’ll tell me what to wear?”

“Just dress nicely—like you were going out on a first date with someone. You don’t have to be decked out in fetish wear. Although you can be if you’d like,” Riley teased.

“My closet doesn’t hold anything that fun.” Sue felt her lips curve into a grin as she imagined squeezing into a latex outfit.

“It’s a date. Now, get out of here!” Riley shooed her away.

“Later, Riley!” Sue waved as she walked to the door with her bag. Davis had shown her the locker room yesterday, so she didn’t need to parade in her workout clothes to the gym.

Walking briskly down the covered walkway, Sue waved through the plate-glass windows at the shop owners she knew. Many had become regulars at Little Cakes. Reaching the gym, she opened the door, stepped inside quickly, and froze as her gaze focused on the perfect male butt facing the entrance as he leaned over.

“Excuse you,” Elizabeth said, bumping into Sue roughly as she passed. “Oh, and by the way, stop gawking. Davis doesn’t date clients.”

Feeling her face flame with embarrassment, Sue rushed to the changing room. She was being completely ridiculous. No one would be interested in her. Especially the handsome owner. Maybe she should leave. Sitting down on the bench, Sue plotted how to get out of there.

A few minutes later, a knock sounded on the door. “Everyone decent in there?” a masculine voice called through the door.

“Um, yeah.”

Davis walked in, holding the door open. “Everything okay? I thought I saw you walk in. I’m ready to get started if you are.”

“Oh, sorry. My mind must have wandered away.” Sue forced herself up in a show of enthusiasm that was completely fake.
