Sue was shaking now as she took the paper bag from Davis and held it out. “Here.”

“Thank you. I really appreciate your kindness.” Viola took the bag and set it on her desk without looking. “I’m terribly sorry about how things happened between you and Troy. I’ve encouraged him to come clean with you many times, but he was too embarrassed.”

“Where is he now?” Davis asked.

Viola met his gaze. “At home. He needed…some time.”

Davis nodded. “Sue needs to be able to move on with her life without having to worry about him constantly bothering her.”

“I can assure you he won’t be a problem anymore,” Viola confirmed.

Davis gave Sue’s hand a squeeze and tipped her chin up to meet his gaze. “Is there anything else you need to say, Cherry?”

She shook her head and whispered, “No, Daddy.” She leaned into his side. Her body was more relaxed. She was no longer gripping his hand as tightly, and her shoulder sagged against his arm.

“I guess that’s it then,” Davis stated, turning his brave Little girl toward the door.

“Thank you for being so understanding,” Viola said as she opened the door. “I wish you both the best.”

“Thank you,” Sue murmured as they left. Davis was proud of her. She didn’t need to return the good wishes. It would take her some time to fully grasp what she’d learned about her ex-husband this morning. She’d been brave and strong. That was all he could ask for.

Chapter Fifteen

Sue was relieved as they pulled away from her ex’s office building. It was finally over. She’d thought she’d feel more upset than she did. Instead, she felt like a weight had lifted. It was finally over. No more Troy.

After a few minutes, she looked up and smiled at her Daddy. “Thank you. I feel much better.”

He returned the smile. “How about we park the car at the gym and then go get a few cupcakes before Daddy works out? I think my Little girl has earned a special treat.”

She grinned wider. “I like that idea, Daddy.”

Five minutes later, Daddy parked the car and came around to help Sue out of her side. When he threaded their fingers together, she swung their arms between them, lighter on her feet for the first time in a long time. She nearly skipped next to him as he led her across the street toward Little Cakes.

As they stepped into the shop, Ellie smiled at them from behind the counter. “Hey, Sue. Hey, Davis. What are you two doing here? You aren’t on the schedule today, are you, Sue?”

Sue shook her head. “Nope. Daddy is treating me to a cupcake because I’ve had a rough morning.”

Ellie frowned. “I hope everything is okay?”

Sue nodded rapidly. “It is now. I won’t have to deal with my ex-husband anymore.”

Ellie smiled again. “I’m glad to hear that. He was draining you.”

Davis pulled Sue in front of him and leaned her against his chest. “From now on, I intend to see to it that Sue’s life is far less stressful. Cupcakes and stuffies. Naps and snuggles. Hugs and kisses.”

Sue’s heart was beating faster as her Daddy leaned over her shoulder and kissed her.

Ellie wiped a tear from her eye as Sue returned her attention to her boss.

Bear came barreling through the door that led to the back room at that moment. He had a tray of Black Forest cupcakes in his hands, but he stopped dead when he saw Ellie’s face. “Why are you crying, Little girl? Who do I need to lecture?”

When Bear shifted his gaze toward Sue and Davis, he was frowning.

Ellie shook her head. “These are happy tears. I’m fine.” She gave him a broad grin as she opened the case so he could slide the cupcakes into the display.

Bear growled. “They better be.” After he settled the cupcakes into place, he shifted his attention to Sue. “You okay, Little girl?”

Sue nodded vigorously. “Very. Thank you.” She wiped a tear away too as it slid down her cheek.

Bear frowned again. “Okay, but I don’t like to see Little girls cry,” he grumbled as he headed back to the kitchen. “You’ve got this, Davis?”

“Sure do,” Davis confirmed.

After Bear disappeared, Ellie took a deep breath. “Two cupcakes on the house. What can I get you?”

“Wait? There’s more than one flavor?” Davis teased.

Sue giggled, and it felt good. “We’ll have Black Forest. I think it’s our signature cupcake.”

“It is a delicious flavor. Ever since we introduced it, I can’t keep them on the shelves. Good thing Bear just brought out a new batch.” Ellie ducked down to pull two cupcakes out of the display and put them in a box. She folded the top down and held it out. “Enjoy.”

Davis took the box. “We will.”

Ellie came around the counter and pulled Sue into a hug, whispering in her ear, “I’m so glad you can put that meanie behind you, and even more glad you found your perfect Daddy.”
