The man needed to get a life. His had ceased to exist when his wife died.

Maybe getting him out of the “office” and out on the “job” would help.

At the next desk over sat Luis Torres, DEA special agent and the plant manager.

“Hey, jefe,” Rez called out as he approached him.

“Vato,” Torres greeted back as he stood.

They clasped hands and bumped shoulders. “Surprised you’re sitting there this late.”

“In-laws are in town. To escape them, I said I had to work.”

“Damn.”

Torres shrugged. “You do what you have to do to survive.”

Rez laughed. “Thank fuck I don’t have in-law problems.”

“All right, what’s so important that we had to meet this late?” Crew hounded him as Rez headed over to the couch along the far wall, threw himself on it and stretched out to get comfortable, folding his arms under his head.

He twisted his neck until he could see the task force leader looking annoyed and leaning back against the conference table with his arms crossed over his chest.

“Got news.”

“No fucking shit. So, spill it,” Crew ordered.

“Why did you need to drag me up here?” Nox asked.

“Yeah, I know that long fucking trip of yours from the second floor to the third was exhausting. Better sit down, brother, and catch your breath.”

“You’re going to be catching these hands if you don’t hurry the fuck up and explain yourself,” Crew warned him. “This better be good, since you could’ve used a piece of modern technology called a phone instead.”

“You were probably busy watching porn on yours.”

Crew shrugged. “It’s got a pause button.”

“Who needs porn when you have live cameras in a strip club?” came from Torres.

What the fuck?

Now he wondered who else on the task force watched the dominatrix routine Sapphire did on stage last week. The one that turned his blood to molten lava and sent it south.

“Rez-avoir dog, let’s go. You love running your mouth, so get to it.”

He was having a hard time getting back on track since Torres’s comment threw him off kilter.

He glanced at Crew, who had his eyebrows raised. “Got my foot in the door at the Wolf Den.”

The room went dead silent.

“How the fuck did you pull that off? And why didn’t you clear it with me first?”

“I did, remember? I told you I offered my construction services to the Demons. We had a whole fucking discussion about it. Nox even made me fake business cards. Are you getting old-timers or something?”

Crew groaned. “Oh fuck. I remember now. You said you were going to offer your services but that was the last I heard of it. They jumped on that?”

“Sure as fuck did. Not only for their church but for The Peach Pit, too.”

“Get the fuck out!” Crew crowed. “Talk about a score! Damn, brother.”

Rez grinned. “I know, right? I’m fucking good. Maybe even better than a certain DEA senior special agent we all know.”

The task force leader snorted. “Let’s not get carried away now.”

“The reason I texted you two to meet me here this late was because Wolf wants me in Uniontown first thing tomorrow fucking morning. Since Nox is knowledgeable with construction, he needs to be part of my construction crew. Otherwise, they’ll see my shoddy work and I’ll get made as a poser.”

“Just Nox?” Crew asked.

“Yeah, I think between the two of us, we can get the job done. When we discussed it, there wasn’t a lot of work left to do. Everything was framed and the wiring was run.”

“From what I can see on the camera footage,” Nox confirmed, “it won’t take much for us to do the finish work. What do they want done at The Peach Pit?”

“Minor shit,” Rez answered him. “Normal maintenance stuff. Sapphire showed me some of what needs fixed when I was there earlier. She’s going to make a list. It’ll be repairs we can easily handle. Even better, Saint told Sapphire to deal directly with me for the work at The Pit. That’s what she now calls The Peach Pit.”

“No shit. Thanks for the explanation, but unlike you, Nox and I are smart enough to figure that out on our own.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. I didn’t get to be in my position if I wasn’t such a damn genius.”

Rez barked out a laugh. “I thought getting down on your knees got you there.”

“You want in on that deal?” Crew asked Nox.

“Getting down on my knees? Fuck no,” Nox responded. “Partnering up with Rez and going under as a construction crew? Fuck yeah. Wouldn’t mind getting out of these four walls.”

Crew and Rez’s eyes met and they had a quick, but silent, conversation about that last statement. It was Nox’s choice to work out of the third floor of The Plant, no one else’s.

Maybe things were starting to look up with him if he was willing to go out and go undercover.
