It was a risk he’d have to take. He only hoped he didn’t regret it.

“Is that your final answer?”

He nodded like the dumbass he was. Because, fuck, he just knew he was going to regret it.

“Never.”

What? His eyes opened. “Never what?”

“If you must know, you’re the first. But in case you’re not aware, my invitation for you to come over had nothing to do with being at The Peach Pit, Rez.”

“It had to do because I’m a sexy beast, right?” He drew a hand down his bare abs and wiggled his eyebrows.

“I’ll give you that. You are a sexy beast. But the difference is, you’re not a customer. I consider you a friend.” When he opened his mouth, she pressed two fingers against it, pursed her own luscious lips and shushed him. “If you ask me how often I fuck my friends, it’s going to be the last question you ask me.”

He grinned under her fingers. When he nodded, she removed them. “Heard you loud and clear. My mouth tends to get me in hot water.”

“I believe it. You indicated before that you didn’t have a filter.”

“Unfortunately, my filter has gaping holes in it.”

Her low laugh in response to his honest answer had his heart doing a somersault in his chest. “I’m surprised your feet don’t have burn scars from stepping in so much hot water.”

“I’m a pro at tiptoeing through the heat. So, anyway…” On to the next hot water topic. “Sorry for not lasting as long as either of us would’ve liked.”

“It’s fine.”

“The word ‘fine’ is deceptive. It could mean you’re truly okay with it, or it could mean you’re not and you’re only being polite.”

“I don’t give a shit about politeness. If I wasn’t fine with it, I would have handed you your pile of clothes and showed you the door.”

“Good to know.”

She poked a finger into his chest. “And I never expect it to be great the first time.”

He began to nod but stopped when what she said sunk into his melon. “What?”

Her grin reminded him of a cat after eating the canary. “Just keeping you on those burnt toes.”

“So, it was good, right?”

“Do I need to answer that? Are you not still standing in my apartment?”

“You’ve kicked men out for shitty sex?”

“I’ve kicked men out for less.”

It didn’t sound like she was joking about that. “Okay, then I’m leaving while I’m ahead. I’ll see you later at the club?”

Her eyebrows pinned together. “You’re coming to The Pit tonight?”

“If you’re working, yeah. It’s New Year’s Day.” He smacked the heel of his palm into his forehead. “Oh fuck, it’s New Year’s Day. I don’t have to go to The Plant.”

“What’s The Plant?”

“It’s… uh… The Blue Avengers clubhouse.”

“Why’s it called The Plant?”

Fuck. “Can I explain that at another time when we have more time? When are you off next? I’d love to invite you over to my place.”

“For dinner?”

“Sure. I can order us something in.” Or ask his mom to make something. She not only loved to cook, she was an expert at it, and he didn’t even have to tell her it was for two. All he had to do was ask for a home-cooked meal and it would be enough for a party of ten.

“You don’t cook?”

“My cooking is barely passable and I don’t want to risk giving you food poisoning.”

“That bad, huh?”

“Just being honest.”

“I prefer honest over bullshit. I’ll check my schedule tonight when I go in. How about I text you?”

“Can you also text me if you see T-Bone?”

“I thought you were coming in?”

“If I do, it’ll be later.”

“What changed?”

What changed was the fact that he couldn’t get cash from Crew to make a buy at The Peach Pit tonight because he forgot it was a damn holiday. So unless T-Bone made a sudden appearance, then the only reason to go was to watch Sapphire and he wasn’t keen on watching the woman he just fucked hours before getting naked in front of a roomful of men. But he could make an exception if...

“Do you want me there?”

She patted his cheek. “I could always use more tips.” Then she laughed and disappeared behind a rack of clothes.

Chapter Nine

He received several texts from Sapphire while she worked the night of New Year’s Day. The first informed him her next day off was Friday. It surprised the fuck out of him that Saint would allow her to take a normally busy night off.

He texted her back immediately with his address and the time for her to come over. The second text he sent was to tell her to bring an overnight bag.

He considered it a good sign when she didn’t balk at that.

The third text asked her if she’d seen T-Bone. She had not. No surprise. That motherfucker went underground and took Sloane’s drug-addicted sister with him.
