Surprised as fuck.

“Nova, did you have any clue that they were dealing in meth?” came from the speaker.

“No, but Russo had a lieutenant running each of his main enterprises. Typical Mob shit. You name it, they’re doing it: racketeering, gambling, loansharking, extortion, money laundering, fencing… The list is endless. Their organization is a thick web of RICO violations and other crimes. But I never once heard Russo talk specifically about trafficking drugs. Keep in mind, I didn’t get to sit in on all of his meetings. There were times when Frank didn’t want me with him and other times when some of his lieutenants didn’t want me in the room.”

“This might be a newer enterprise for them and if they were distributing drugs when you were undercover with them, it was on a much smaller scale,” Crew said.

“Do you think Jr. decided to expand in that direction once he took over?” Fletch asked her.

“Could be,” Nova answered. “Once Frank set his sights on me, he kept me close. He didn’t want me catching Frankie’s interest, so maybe it was already in the works.”

“That’s what we’re assuming at this point,” Crew said.

“So, now what?” Fletch asked him.

Jesus. When the fuck was Nova going to get free from those motherfucking mobsters? This news just pulled her back in. In a way, anyway.

They’d have to make sure Nova was never involved with that end of the meth investigation. Because if anyone in that organization recognized her…

The vision of her on the floor in her condo with Russo’s soldier ready to kill her blinded him for a second.

“Want you two to keep doing what you’re doing, if you’re up for it. Already cleared it with the DAMC president. Since we’re paying them hefty rent for you two to shack up in that apartment, they’re okay with you staying there. For now, anyway. Keep making contact with Wolf, keep doing buys. Maybe the more comfortable the Demons get with you, the more they’ll trust you and possibly run their mouth. Nova just needs to stay away from Pittsburgh and even farther away from the Russos. We don’t want her cover blown because one of them recognizes her. No one’s going to believe she went from Russo Sr.’s side piece to a biker’s ol’ lady.”

“Agreed.”

“You all right with remaining on the task force, Nova?” Crew asked. “If not, I can probably find a replacement.”

A replacement? “As my ol’ lady?” he practically squeaked. He cleared his throat quickly. Nobody was replacing Kitten.

“No, dummy, as a member of the task force. If she wants out, we could have her leave Ghost’s cheating ass.”

“Ghost doesn’t cheat, asshole!”

Nova burst out laughing and patted his bare chest. “He meant as a cover story.”

“I knew that.”

Crew’s loud snort filled the space between Fletch and Nova. “Good thing you have the brains, Nova, because him being pretty isn’t enough.”

“Hey! I graduated at the top of my academy class.”

“That’s not saying much, brother. We’re talking the state police here, not much brain power needed, unlike us special agents. Right, Nova?”

Nova pinned her lips together. “Mmm hmm.”

“Don’t agree with him,” Fletch muttered. “Especially if you expect me to…” He stuck out his tongue and licked the air.

She whacked him and shook her head.

“Expect you to do what?” Crew prodded.

“Nothing,” Fletch answered.

“I’ll just use my imagination, then.”

“How about visualizing me giving you the middle finger instead?”

“Okay, I’ll keep you updated, but for now, I’m keeping you two with the Dirty Angels for as long as they’ll tolerate you. Want you to keep buying from the Demons for at least a few more weeks.”

“I’m good with it.” Fletch turned to Nova. “You up for it?”

“I had to give up my place because of those fucking Russos. So, hell yes. I want to be involved with taking those fuckers down. Whether directly or indirectly.”

Fletch hit mute. “That’s the only reason you want to stay?”

She rolled into him.

“Nova…”

She grinned. “What?”

“Yo, asshole! Do you have the phone muted? I can’t hear shit.”

Fletch unmuted the phone. “We’re good with it.”

He stabbed at the End Call icon and the call disconnected as Crew was starting to say something else.

He tossed the phone back onto the nightstand, then rolled toward Nova until they both lay on their side, facing each other.
