They were at the point now where that conversation was needed. Because if Crew showed up and gave them the bad news that one or both of them were being pulled from the task force, he didn’t want what developed between them, so far, to end.

He had just found her, he didn’t want to lose her.

He hoped she felt the same.

But that conversation would have to wait until after speaking with Crew.

In Cranberry Township, while waiting at her condo for the local uniforms and the coroner to show up, they both made their required notifications to report their agent- and officer-involved shootings.

Then Fletch contacted Crew before anyone else could.

Of course the task force leader advised them to not say shit to the locals, to simply let them babysit the crime scene and start their reports, and for Fletch and Nova to head back to the apartment to wait.

Crew advised he would call the Assistant U.S. Attorney and do what he could to speed along the process. The DEA considered the Demons’ case a priority because of the amount of meth being trafficked and he was afraid the investigation might stall if they had to pull Fletch and Nova and put others in their place. If that happened, they’d be restarting from scratch to build a relationship with the Demons. Attempting to do so could raise some red flags with the outlaw MC.

With Nova upstairs on a video call with the FBI’s Pittsburgh Field Office special agent in charge, he had decided to step outside so he wouldn’t distract her. He also figured they might not want him hearing their discussion about the Russos, in case some of it was classified.

The other reason, besides to try to relieve his pent-up energy, was to wait for Crew. It wouldn’t hurt to talk to his fellow Blue Avenger and the task force leader alone to get a read on what might go down.

He heard the Harley long before he saw it turn onto the side street and then the lot. He had to step out of the way so Crew wouldn’t run his ass over since the man was coming in hot.

The DEA agent wore his signature mirrored sunglasses. What wasn’t typical for him was his dirty, worn jeans and the holey Harley T-shirt. The only thing missing for him to look like he belonged in an MC was a cut. Of course he wouldn’t wear their BAMC colors deep in DAMC territory. That could raise all kinds of suspicion, especially with him meeting with Ghost and Kitten. And they already had enough shit going on.

As Crew swung a leg over the seat, Fletch approached him. They bumped fists but neither said a word before scanning the lot to make sure no one was in earshot.

“We going up?” Crew asked, jerking his chin toward the metal staircase.

“Not yet. Nova’s in the middle of a video debriefing with her SAC.”

Crew scraped his fingers through his short salt-and-pepper hair. “No surprise. It’s routine. Well, not by video but at least they didn’t force her to go into the field office. If we want to keep her undercover, it’s best she doesn’t go strolling into an FBI building.” He sighed and slid off his sunglasses, folding them before hanging them from the neckline of his T-shirt. “Truth, brother, do you think your covers are blown?”

“Told you they weren’t.”

“Yeah, but you called me right after shit just hit the fan. Now that a few hours have passed, I’m assuming you and Nova had a chance to go over what went down and compare the smaller details. Do you think there’s any fucking chance? I don’t want either of you compromised and then blowing this investigation by being outed as UCs.”

“No,” Fletch answered with confidence.

“Not even Nova’s?”

“Nope. I heard some of what those fuckers were spewing before I kicked in the door, but while we waited for the locals, she went over everything they said to her, from the second they showed up to the second they stopped breathing, so we could both analyze it. Those motherfuckers had no idea she’s FBI. They had no clue she was undercover when she was with Russo Sr.”

“Thank fuck. Now I can fight to keep you as part of the task force. I’d hate to have to replace you both since you did a damn good job getting right where I needed you with the Uniontown chapter of the Demons. And who the fuck knows, if we had to replace you, whether the Angels would be willing to cooperate again.”

“If I had to take a fucking guess? No. Remember when we were all surprised as fuck when they agreed in the first place? Now after being around them, I can say that approaching them a second time would probably be met with more resistance than the initial ask.”
