She stared up at him with her pupils wide and her lips parted. Oh yeah, she got it.

Just thinking about her waiting for him like that was beginning to make him hard and now was not the time for that. He needed to spend some time with his Valee Girl first.

“Has anyone ever told you how bossy you are?”

“Yes, and, if you haven’t guessed by now, I don’t give a fuck.” He grinned and winked at her, scoring him a smile.

“Good.”

“Glad you see it that way,” he said against her temple where he pressed his lips.

She pressed a hand to his chest and pushed. “You still stink.”

“Message received.” He straightened. “Meet you in the bedroom.”

“It’s a date.”

Every night after Val was tucked into bed and the four-year-old got swept away into dreamland, Decker joined Sloane in his bed.

The nights he worked into the early morning hours, she found she had a hard time falling asleep. Mostly because in the dark and the quiet, all she could think about were two things: whether her sister was safe and whether Decker was, too.

Even though his regular job of being a corporal with the state police could be high risk, dealing with the Demons up close and personal had to be even more dangerous.

The only nights she slept soundly were when he climbed into bed with her and fucked her until she couldn’t think straight.

Sex with Decker was rough, powerful, and mind-blowing. Better yet, it made her sleep like the dead afterward.

Around four or five in the morning, he’d extract himself from the tangle of limbs and sheets and head into the spare bedroom to catch a few more winks of sleep. He worried about Val coming to look for him if she woke up early since he didn’t want her to get the wrong idea about their relationship. Sloane couldn’t blame him. She was only there until he found Sadie.

But even in the short time she’d lived with him, she could see this undercover assignment was taking a toll on him mentally and physically. He’d come home exhausted and wake up still exhausted because of the long, odd hours. And summoning up the energy to have sex with her probably didn’t help since it cut into his sleep time.

She told him that they didn’t have to have sex every night after he returned home or every morning after Val was dropped off at preschool, but the look he gave her when she mentioned that clearly read…

She was crazy if she expected him to turn down sex.

While she did agree with that assessment, still… It didn’t stop her from worrying about him.

Val needed him. His mother needed him.

Frankly, so did she.

And she was surprised to find her need only partially had to do with his search for Sadie. Every day she lived in his house, slept in his bed, helped raise his “daughter,” took care of the household chores—like cleaning, cooking and grocery shopping—because he was gone too many hours to get it done himself… she slipped farther into a very comfortable spot. In his life, in his bed, in his home and as an essential part of his little family.

Yes, she was getting too comfortable in her role as the “woman of the house,” even as old-fashioned as that term was. As well as finding so much satisfaction during their intimate moments together.

Somehow, even though it was supposed to be only a quid pro quo arrangement, it had turned into something far from platonic.

Even more, living with Decker and Val like a real family made her realize what she’d been missing out on with not being a wife and mother.

Were those two roles for everyone? Definitely not. But she never would’ve discovered just how right it felt for herself if this opportunity hadn’t come up.

On one hand it made her want to curse at Decker, and thank him on the other. Because once this was all over and Sadie was found, and everyone went back to their own lives and routines, she was going to miss this.

And him.

And his daughter.

Even his mother.

All of it.

She’d most likely end up back in a dingy motel by herself, her only focus being on work in an effort to keep clawing her way out of the financial hole she’d fallen into.

But she wouldn’t be leaving tonight, or anytime soon, unless by some miracle her sister was found. Preferably alive.

When she heard his very familiar footsteps, a shiver slithered down her spine and goosebumps danced along every inch of her skin in anticipation of what was to come. She twisted her head to get a good look at him as he strode naked and freshly showered to the bed where she waited exactly like he asked.

Or demanded.

She preferred the second.

She couldn’t explain why his commanding presence, tone and orders did it for her. They just did. Maybe it was because it only happened during sexy times and not outside of it.
