“No.”

Wolf’s dark eyes dropped to Decker’s zipper. “Got a cunt down there you ain’t tellin’ us about that the kid came outta? You one of those he-shes or somethin’?”

Jesus. “My,” he swallowed down the truth, “ol’ lady’s dead.”

Wolf’s bushy eyebrows shot up his creased forehead. “Yeah? You kill ‘er?”

What the actual fuck. Now he needed to do a “story time” with this asshole the same way he did with Val. “No. Another fuckin’ bitch did.”

“Yeah?”

“Got caught ridin’ another man’s dick. His wife shot him. Her, too.”

Wolf murmured, “Damn.”

“Yeah. Left me stuck raisin’ the kid myself.”

“That fuckin’ blows.”

It didn’t. He wouldn’t want anything else. But what he didn’t want was to live away from Val. Even temporarily. If that happened, he was telling Crew to find someone else for this undercover assignment. That was his hard limit.

Family always came first. His career came second, including his brotherhoods with both the state police and the Blue Avengers.

“Yeah, don’t need no yappy ankle biters ‘round here. Plenty of others to fill those rooms once they’re done.”

Decker wouldn’t want Val hanging around there, either. And not only because his four-year-old didn’t know how to keep a secret.

“Where’s your fuckin’ cut?”

“Should have it by tomorrow night.”

“Good, make sure you got it for the party this weekend at the farmhouse. Starts Friday night, ends when everyone’s dead or wishin’ they were. Show up with two kegs.”

Show up with two kegs? Was this his first test as a prospect? “How am I supposed to haul two kegs on my sled?”

Wolf stared at him. “Sounds like your fuckin’ problem, not mine. Figure it the fuck out. Once you’re there, gonna have other shit for you to do. Since you’re new, you’re the lowest of the low. You’re at the goddamn bottom of the barrel of recruits. So pay attention… Any patched member tells you to do somethin’, you fuckin’ do it. Don’t care what it is. You wanna earn your full set of patches, you do what you’re fuckin’ told. You don’t? We got no problem rippin’ that rocker right off your cut and kickin’ your ass down the road like a fuckin’ can.”

“Got it. Will be there with a coupla kegs. Ain’t a problem.”

“Better not be. And hope you got someone to watch your semen demon, too. Ain’t gonna be an excuse to get you outta shit. Get a house mouse or somethin’. Never know, one of the hang-arounds might need a place to stay. Can help you raise that kid.”

That was never going to happen. Not in his lifetime. Not in a million lifetimes.

“They’re willin’ to do whatever you want to keep a roof over their heads.”

And drugs in their system.

“All right. Got shit to do. Hang out. Go home to your snot-nosed shit. Don’t give a fuck.”

As Decker turned to head back into the gas station to hang for a little bit, Wolf called out, “Hang on.”

He waited while Wolf pulled out a cell phone from an inside pocket of his worn, dirty cut. “Need your digits. I text or call, you answer. Don’t give a shit what time it is. Don’t give a shit where you are. Don’t give a shit what you’re doin’. Don’t even give a shit if your semen demon’s sucklin’ on your tit. You answer.”

“Understood,” Decker muttered, rattling off the number to his assigned task force phone.

When he turned to head down the hallway again, Wolf called out, “One more thing…”

Fuck me with a goddamn cactus.

Decker glanced back over his shoulder.

“Don’t fuck up,” came the gruff warning from Wolf.

That warning sounded all too familiar.

He was going to do his best not to fuck up. The investigation depended on it.

Chapter Four

Sloane gripped the steering wheel so hard, her fingers had gone numb. Her heart was ready to gallop right out of her chest at any second. Every muscle cramped from being tense during the long ride from Pennsylvania into this backwoods area of West Virginia.

None of that mattered.

She could be bleeding out right now and it still wouldn’t stop her from what she was about to do.

Nothing would.

She had no idea what she’d be walking into, but if she found her sister, there’d be no damn way she would be walking back out alone. No matter how much her sister fought her. No matter how much her sister protested.

If Sloane had to drag Sadie out by her hair kicking and screaming, she would.

She would do anything… anything… to save her.

Despite having already done everything she could think of, it still hadn’t been enough. If it had, she wouldn’t be driving down a dirt driveway—calling the narrow, unmaintained path a driveway was being generous—surrounded by overgrown weeds out in the middle of nowhere.

Heading into an unknown situation.

Most likely with dangerous people.

All because Sadie was known to hang out with the kind of people who could supply what she needed. And, unfortunately, the Deadly Demons MC was her latest source.
