Rez shrugged. “Worth a shot.”

“If anything, they’d give that fucker an award. Hail him as a hero,” Reynolds chimed in.

“Don’t worry,” Torres began, “he’ll get indicted along with the rest. He can make some new friends in the federal penitentiary.”

“Him going to prison isn’t enough for me,” Finn said.

Rez agreed. “What he said. Prison will be too easy. It might be like a fucking vacation for that asshole.”

Crew stared at the both of them. “Don’t do anything stupid. Don’t even think about doing anything stupid. That motherfucker isn’t worth losing your damn jobs and ending up in the cell next to him.”

“You’re no fun,” Rez grumbled.

“He used to have a sense of humor before…” Finn let that drift off.

“Before?” Reynolds prodded.

“Our latest task force member joined the team,” Decker answered with a snort.

All eyes turned toward him. “I still have a sense of humor!”

Torres chuckled. “You’ve had a fucking stick up your ass since you went up to the agency’s offices and spoke with Williams.”

“And Cabrera joined our team,” Reynolds added with wiggle of his eyebrows.

“Anyway... We have an investigation to run…”

A burst of laughter came from Finn. “Someone doesn’t want to hear the truth.”

Decker grinned. “The truth tends to hurt.”

Since they were on the topic of their newest member… “Speaking of Cabrera, I don’t like not having cameras set up at that bar. Maybe we should work on getting some in there.”

“I’m not sure they’ll approve that with the budget we have,” Torres said. “Are you worried about her?”

“I worry about my whole team,” Crew answered.

“But you worry about her a little more than the rest of us?”

“She’s the principal deputy director’s daughter.” Since Torres was also a DEA agent, he knew what that meant.

“Is that the real reason?” Finn asked.

“What other reason would I have?”

Finn shrugged but had a gleam in his eye. “You tell me.”

“I just told you the reason. But if you need to know another one… She has bruises from working there.”

Decker spun around in his chair. “What are you talking about?”

“She got them from the fine patrons of that bar grabbing her… Maybe even worse. She wouldn’t share the details.”

“Wait. When I saw her dropping off the car this morning, I didn’t see any,” Finn exclaimed. “When and how did you see these bruises?”

“I stopped over at Fletch’s yesterday and she was using the pool,” he lied.

Rez’s dark eyes narrowed on him. “Why would you stop over there? I thought we no longer needed to check on the house.”

“We don’t. I needed to get an update from her.”

He didn’t miss it when the guys all shared glances. And raised eyebrows. And grins began to pop up on their faces.

“Isn’t that what the daily reports are for?” Reynolds asked, fighting a smile.

For fuck’s sake. He might have just stepped in some shit that would be hard to scrape off.

Chapter Twenty-Three

“Maybe it has nothing to do with the fact that Cabrera joined the team and who her father is. Maybe what’s up Crew’s ass is Cabrera herself,” Finn suggested, his grin bigger than the others.

Of fucking course.

“Could be.” Decker stroked his chin and pretended like he was seriously considering what Finn said.

“She’s a rookie agent and she’s undercover in that bar by herself. A bar packed with outlaw bikers, if you need that reminder. Bikers who don’t respect women and can be violent. Let’s also not forget they think they can take whatever they want whenever they want it.” For fuck’s sake, why did he feel the need to explain himself?

“We’re well aware of what motherfuckers they are, J. Crew. I’m sure she is, too. Did she say she was worried for her safety?” Rez asked.

Of fucking course not.

“I’ll take your silence as a no. Isn’t she the one who volunteered to go undercover there after she scoped out the joint?” Rez waited about half a second before answering his own question. “I’ll take your silence as a yes.”

“You could always have Fletch and Wilder go in and observe. They haven’t gone in there since hooking up with Wolf, right?”

Decker’s suggestion might actually be a good one.

“I don’t think they’ve been there recently.” Crew didn’t remember reading anything about it on their dailies. But then, he only skimmed theirs since Fletch and Wilder had their part of the investigation under control.

If anything major came up that he needed to know, Fletch called him.

“Well, there you go,” Decker continued with a shrug, “they could go in and hang out. Even though it’s now owned by the Demons, it’s still open to anyone wearing colors, including the Dirty Angels.”

“Maybe,” Crew murmured as he considered this option.

“If you’re so damn worried about her, they could be your eyes and ears,” Torres agreed. “Even if we got approval to install cameras, it would be a while before that could be arranged.”
