If he thought by challenging her and questioning her skills, he would make her walk away, he was so damn wrong.

Screw that. All it did was make her burrow deeper. Make her more determined to prove him wrong.

And she would. Not only with task force business but with how he was denying what he wanted from her. The real reason he wanted her to leave the task force. Not because she wasn’t capable but so he would no longer be tempted.

She could see it plain as day in his face. In the way he held himself.

He was fighting it.

He was beating himself up over it.

Guilt.

He was full of guilt.

And besides that kiss by the pool, they hadn’t even done a damn thing yet.

Neither had crossed that line. A very thin line that could easily be blurred. It would only take one of them making the next move.

Who would it be? Who would break first?

His grip tightened on her hair, causing her scalp to sting. His Adam’s apple lodged at the top of his throat for a few seconds before dropping like a rock.

His eyes widened slightly when hers narrowed.

Neither said a word but so many things were being said between them.

They were either doing this or they weren’t. Either he had to release her, or she had to break free of his hold.

He squeezed his eyes shut and whispered, “We can’t do this.”

His strained words didn’t sound convincing.

“Then let me go.” Hers didn’t, either.

When his gray eyes flashed open, she saw his struggle, along with her own, reflected in his eyes.

“I don’t want to.”

Finally, some truth.

So, she gave some back to him. “I don’t want you to.”

“It’s wrong.” When his ragged breath swept over her lips, she licked them, drawing his eyes there.

“You’re right,” she breathed. “And I don’t care.”

“You should.”

“Something needs to break.”

His head dropped even lower, bringing his lips just a fraction from hers. “This is not how to break it.”

“Then, let me go,” she told him again.

“Make me.”

“You don’t want that.”

For fuck’s sake, she was right.

It was when her lips curved up into a wicked smile, he knew he lost this fight.

Right then. Right there.

She was going to win.

And he was going to let her.

“Fuck it,” he murmured and took her mouth.

Their lips and tongues crashed against each other, fighting for control. He wouldn’t give her the upper-hand and she wouldn’t give it to him, either.

This kiss was just as hot as the one by the pool, but this time it wasn’t going to end like it had that day.

He was done fighting it. He would embrace what he wanted and to hell with the consequences. He’d deal with those later. When his head wasn’t filled with the woman whose lips moved against his. Whose groans filled his mouth. Whose tongue twisted with his.

He released her hair, reaching under her T-shirt and grabbing her ass with both hands. He expected her to be wearing panties. She wore none.

He squeezed the warm, bare flesh filling his palms, and pulled her even closer. They stood so tightly sandwiched together that she had to feel how hard he was. How hard she made him.

After all those nights he pictured doing this in his mind, today it would happen. He would finally be able to touch and taste her everywhere. He’d finally be able to fuck her hard and fast. For real this time.

No longer solely in his imagination. It would be so much safer for him to keep her there. But, damn, what man didn’t want his fantasies to come true? What man didn’t act on those fantasies if the opportunity presented itself?

It should be him. He shouldn’t want it.

She was young. His subordinate. He’d worked with her father. A man who could crush his career. And he still remembered her as a kid.

Worse, she got off on butting heads with him.

She was all fucking wrong for him.

But what if wrong was right?

Because he had thought his ex was the perfect woman for him. Until she wasn’t. Until her true personality was revealed. Until their relationship turned toxic.

And worse, that toxicity affected his kids.

For fuck’s sake. Was he really trying to come up with a valid reason for them to do this? To make this mistake and act like it wasn’t one?

He was so fucking torn.

She was that piece of pie he shouldn’t eat because he was already stuffed full from dinner. He knew he should say no, but ended up eating it anyway. Worse, regretting it later.

But, damn, it tasted good while eating it.

And, damn, she tasted good despite the fact she only recently woke up and didn’t have time to brush her teeth. Or the fact she just drank some of that mess she considered coffee.

He didn’t give a fuck. Neither did his cock.

Her groan shook him from his wandering thoughts, and he focused on the woman smashed against him.
