“That’s awesome. You think you’ll stay after you graduate college then?” Emma moved here her last two years of high school on a foreign exchange program. She was offered a scholarship here, so she stayed.

“I’d like to, but I’ve heard it’s hard to get citizenship here. And it’s pricey.”

“I’ve heard that too. Unless you marry someone from here.”

“I don’t see that happening. There’s not a lot of hot men filling up my tray with food, if you know what I mean.” She wiggles her eyebrows, and I burst into laughter.

I change the subject back to a paper we both have to write. It’s not that I’m opposed to a bit of advice; I'm just not sure where River and I really stand, and I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I’m still not sure what really happened last night.

He claims I ditched him, but I mean, I was already home, and we’d called it a night. I did, however, make it impossible for him to get into contact with me. I’d gotten into the shower so I wouldn’t hear him knock if he did. I think a part of me worried that he wouldn’t and then I’d have to face that.

“I want you to turn your head slowly after I say this. Don’t go snapping it around. Get what I’m saying?”

“Sure, I guess?” I have no clue what she means, but I go with it.

“Do you know the guys sitting at your three o’clock?”

Ah, I do know this move. I give it a second before I turn to take a glance. When my eyes finally land on them casually, they all quickly look away, except one of them, and the guy winks at me.

“Not a clue,” I tell her.

“Good. I’ve overhead two of them before running their mouths. I think they have a class close to mine on Tuesday and Thursday mornings over by the north side of campus. They get their morning fix at that little coffee stand there. All they talk about is who they banged the night before. Don’t let me hear your name one morning.”

I cringe. The idea of someone talking about me with his friends the next morning after something so intimate makes my stomach turn. That’s all kinds of messed up.

“Not gonna happen. They aren’t even my type.”

“What is your type? Tall with dark hair, knows what you like to eat and has possessive eyes?”

“Possessive eyes?” I laugh as I shake my head.

“I know what I saw.” She winks at me.

We end up exchanging numbers before we have to part ways. Both of us have another class today in opposite directions.

My next class drags by because all I can think about is River showing up. Or am I supposed to go up to his place? Is he really going to try and kiss me? Pin me to something? I press my thighs together at that thought. Until another thought enters my mind and kills my buzz.

Have he and Lisa ever hooked up? One question after another pops into my head. It’s exhausting, and I don’t catch half of what my professor says. Thankfully, all of his classes are recorded, and I can watch them again online if I need to.

As I make my way back to my building, I’m a ball of anxiety. One thought after another enters my head. I obsess over if he’s really going to kiss me and if he’s kissed the girl next door.

Which is ironic, because Lisa doesn’t seem so innocent. She’s more like the homecoming queen next door. How many girls has he kissed? Would he compare me to all of them?

I swear my thoughts conjure her out of thin air. When I get to the top of the stairs on my floor, the elevator doors open, and there Lisa is. Her eyes narrow on me, and it must be a miracle. She can suddenly see me, so I guess she’s gone from pretending I don’t exist to hating me. Lovely.

Pretending I don’t notice her, I turn my attention to my bag to find my keys. I see her heels pass by in the corner of my eye. How the heck does she wear those all day? That’s some superpower stuff right there.

“River?” she suddenly says.

Is she asking me about him? I lift my head to actually see River leaning up against my door. He smiles as he pushes away from it and starts walking toward me. Well, I guess toward Lisa too since she's now in front of me.

“I knew you’d change your mind,” she says.

“I didn’t.” He sidesteps her, still coming toward me with a look of determination on his face.

“I thought we were meeting tonight?” I ask as he comes closer, not slowing down.

“Couldn’t wait.” His hand comes out, slipping to the back of my neck to grip me there. “Couldn't wait one more second.” He pulls me toward him as he brings his mouth down on mine.
