My insides curl in on themselves, my head falls back to my shoulders, and a wave of heat rolls through my bloodstream, heat so hot I see stars. Before I even have a chance to get used to his size in this position, he lifts me with ease, then sets me back down on his length, setting the pace.

His hands roam up my body, and I lift my arms so he can remove his tee that I’m still wearing. Free of the material, I shudder when his arms wrap around me, and his mouth devours my breast, my fingers spearing through his hair. I hold on as I ride him with quick thrusts of my hips.

“Oh God.” My head falls back again, my insides contracting around his hard length. Close. So close I hold my breath and focus all my attention on the sensation crawling up my spine and prickling my skin.

“Give me your mouth, Em.” The command has my head falling forward and my mouth finding his, where he’s doing a crunch to get closer to me, his abs flexed and giving me a visual that makes me moan just before I kiss him.

Clenching around him, I lose his mouth, unable to focus on anything but the wave of pleasure that sets fire to my cells and sends me flying. I absently hear him groan my name as his arms band around me so tight it’s difficult to breathe.

So completely lost in him and the sensations still washing over me, I bury my face in his neck and wrap my arms around his shoulders.

Skin soaked and heart pounding, he falls from his crunch to his back, and I sprawl out across his chest with him still inside me. He doesn’t move except to drag the blanket over us when I shiver, and I don’t ask if I’m too heavy or offer to get up.

I could live here, right here in his arms. And that is the last thought I have before my eyelids get too heavy to keep open, and I fall asleep against his chest with his cock still buried within me.

The next time I wake, it’s to the sound of Miles’s alarm. I cringe from the sound and the wet mess he and I have made of ourselves. I don’t have time to be embarrassed about it, because with the strength I don’t possess, he rolls us out of bed, then stands. Keeping an arm under my bottom, he carries me to the bathroom.

Still holding me, he turns on the shower, and I pull my face out of his neck. “You can put me down.”

“I could.” His eyes roam over my face.

“What?” I ask softly when he looks me over for so long I start to feel exposed.

“Nothing.” He shakes his head like he’s coming out of his thoughts and steps into the shower, finally letting me slide down his body. The tile is cold on the bottom of my feet, but the water is hot, and when he closes the door, the glass-enclosed space almost instantly fills with steam.

I don’t have a chance to look for soap to wash up with before his suds-covered hands start roaming over my body. In all my years, I’ve never had a man care for me in the ways he has in such a short time. In ways I didn’t think were important, or that I did without because they were never given freely. There was always a later reminder of what was done for me, so I’d feel obligated to give something in return.

A cup of coffee, a glass of wine, a bath—each thing so small but so huge to me, and I doubt he even realizes it.

CHAPTER 22

miles

I thought that with the way my day started with Em, I would float through the day on cloud fucking nine. But standing in Chief Marshall’s office with my back to the wall and arms crossed over my chest, I listen with rage curling through my insides as Mrs. Taylor, Grace’s mom, speaks with pain stark in her voice. Over the last few weeks, the state police have completely cut off communication with her, instead going to her father to pass on any bits of information they have. Which is never much, and as far as she knows, the case has gone completely cold.

“I want you to take over the case.” The broken, whispered plea from a mother who lost her daughter in the most tragic way has my hands balling into fists. I glance over at Martinez, who is standing much the same as me, his face filled with the same rage I’m feeling. “I… I know my father insisted on the state police being in charge, but she’s my daughter. Shouldn’t it be my choice?”

“Mrs. Taylor,” Chief Marshall says softly, leaning toward her even with the desk between them. “I wish—”
