“Nothing,” I reply, crying out when a wave of pleasure hits me. I want to come so hard.

He cups my throat and pulls me back against his body. It’s a good thing my balance isn’t terrible, though to be honest he’s doing most of the work, including holding me steady.

“Exactly. Nothing.” His thrusts get faster and more powerful, he plays with my clit, rubbing it furiously in time with each push.

I tremble and spasm and then, finally, I orgasm so hard my leg buckles. I catch myself on the vanity, whimpering with pleasure, tears spring to my eyes as he cries out his own release, throbbing inside of me. His cock feels like it’s on fire as I pulse and clench around him.

He cages me in, both hands gripping the sink, eyes holding mine in the mirror.

We communicate without words, separating and cleaning each other like longtime lovers, not new ones.

We share a gentle kiss and get dressed in new clothes before heading back to work, acting like nothing happened.

Because it didn’t.

Nothing happened.

I push it out of my mind, forcing the shame down with it and file another police report.

At the end of the day, I meet Ezra in his office before leaving for the day and he drives me to his parents’ house. He kisses my forehead at their door, letting his lips linger but we don’t even utter the words goodbye.

The following morning, I pack what few things I have at Izabella and Mario’s and say a teary goodbye.

Erika gives me a ride home, chatting animatedly about her partner the entire way there.

What a lovely family.

A family that will never be mine.

A family that Elizabeth doesn’t appreciate but has anyway. Why is life so cruel to those of us with nothing already?

An hour later, being the coward that I am, I go to Laurie’s, curl up in her bed and cry until her tics make me laugh again.

What a shameful web I’ve woven.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

He always makes me laugh.

“There’s a package for you,” Laurie calls from the other side of her apartment. “It has a yummy man attached to it.”

“Hey,” Kyle whines from somewhere else in the apartment. I love how strong they’re both going, and how supportive of each other they are. I wish Pax had been like that. Perhaps I’d have been in love with him now instead.

“You’re yummier, babe.”

“I beg to differ,” Mr. Conti rumbles.

“You’re early!” I shout but I’m smiling. “Way too early.”

“I have a gift.”

“Oooh, I like gifts, bring it in. I’m decent.”

Not even Laurie knows about the nothing that didn’t happen between Mr. Conti and myself and it sucks because I can’t tell her either. One, I’m pretty sure she’d be super pissed at me and maybe fall out with me altogether and, two, she’d accidentally shout it out in her tics.

Laurie and secrets are not a good mix.

I need to make more friends. Not that Laurie isn’t incredible, but just because I only have a few acquaintances and no people with real substance in my life. It’s my fault for being so weird. Kidding.

Although I don’t know how many people will want to be friends with me if they found out I did nothing with a married man.

“You say bring it in but bring it in to where?” he asks, chuckling as he moves through the one-story apartment.

“That way, stud,” Laurie tells him and then giggles.

“Laurie, stop flirting with my boss.”

“Yeah, Laurie,” Kyle adds, “stop it.”

Laurie giggles all the way to Kyle just as Mr. Conti appears in my doorway.

I eye him hungrily. For lack of better words to describe him… he looks so incredibly sexy. His hair has been cut and is styled slightly to the side, his beard is slightly longer and razor sharp on the edge of his jaw and cheekbones, he’s the sexiest man on earth and he’s cheating on his wife for me.

For me.

Fuck.

I don’t swear much because I don’t like to, but I felt a need for it then.

I’m such a hypocritical contradiction of a woman. I’m mad at myself for what I’m doing to his wife, all the while praying he never stops wanting me. I glance around him to see if anybody is looking and kiss his lips, keeping my eyes on his while they stay connected.

He smiles and returns it, delicately touching my waist.

I pull back and see a box wrapped in a plain, white paper bag.

“What’s this, I wonder?” I snatch it from him then carefully empty the contents onto my borrowed bed. I see the state-of-the-art Android phone logo and model on the box and blink twice. “This is a really expensive gift.”

“So was adding Laurie to that flight to Vegas but you didn’t complain then.”

I glare at him playfully. “You said that was on the company.”

“Who owns the company?”

Fair point.

I pick up the box and carefully remove the stiff sleeve. “Thank you, Ezra.”
