“You,” Mr. Conti barks, pointing at me. “Back to your desk.”

“Yes, sir,” I mutter, stifling my grin as I duck past him.

Pax pats my butt as I go, so I give him a wide-eyed, “what the hell?” look.

“Pax,” Conti snaps and I shut the door behind me, giving another smug grin to Julia as I pass her.

When I return to my desk, Mrs. Conti is nowhere to be found.

I get back on with my work and wait for Mr. C to return. It takes a few minutes and I hear yelling, but he comes back and completely ignores me before slamming his office door shut.

Rose: What happened?

Pax: I just received my first disciplinary.

Rose: For what?

Pax: For having sex at work. So worth it though. Want to come back and finish?

Rose: Not funny, Pax. What really happened?

Pax: I’m serious. Somebody complained that they could hear us.

Rose: Who?

Pax: Probably Julia.

Rose: Maybe. She totally wants you. She always glares at me.

Pax: I wouldn’t touch her with a ten-foot barge pole, baby, you’ve got nothing to worry about.

Rose: I’m not worried, if I was worried, I’d never have told you.

Pax: Fair point.

Rose: See you tomorrow then? I don’t have any more breaks today.

Pax: See you tonight. I want to finish what we started.

Rose: I can’t tonight, I’m hanging out with Laurie.

Pax: Oh I fucking adore her. She’s hilarious.

I’m glad he likes Laurie, he met her last week when I forgot she was visiting and Pax was in my kitchen, naked, cooking us breakfast, an apron tied around his front to stop any grease from burning his delectable chest. I’ve never seen Laurie drool so much over a guy before. It made my chest swell with pride. I pulled that. I sleep with that man.

I wonder if that’s how Mrs. Conti feels about Mr. Conti? She’d be an idiot if she didn’t.

Not that I think he’s insanely attractive or anything.

I mean, he is, I’d be blind if I missed it. But I don’t find him attractive, I just think he’s very nice to look at. He’s also an amazing dad and a great husband from what I’ve seen.

Rose: I’d invite you but I need girl time.

Pax: :’-(

Rose: Stop it. Get back to work.

Pax: Speaking of work. Did Conti give you a disciplinary too?

Rose: Not yet. I guess we’ll see.

It takes him an hour before he buzzes me through, and when I enter, he doesn’t say a word about what happened, he smiles at me and we get on with the job.

What the hell?

While he talks and I listen, I pull the pins from my hair and let my bun fall. It’s a mess anyway after what happened in Pax’s office.

I move to the mirror and fluff it out, running my fingers through it so I can put it back into a bun again.

Conti stops mid-sentence, cutting off his speech on how solar energy is the way forward and blah blah. I always listen to his pitches and then we work on them together to make them the best they can be.

I meet his eyes in the mirror, a bobby pin between my lips.

“You should leave it down more often,” he says softly, his eyes roaming my face. “It really suits you.”

The bobby pin falls from my lips and to the floor, but I can’t take my eyes off his.

He stands and prowls towards me. I’m frozen in place like a deer in headlights. My heart is racing.

Bending, he picks up the pin and takes my hair from my hands. His rough fingers drag across my scalp and my eyes flutter shut. An intense feeling of butterflies in my stomach makes me feel close to orgasm again. I almost beg him to stop because this isn’t right. This doesn’t feel friendly. It feels too friendly.

His hands work through my hair, pulling it and parting it, twisting it and manipulating it.

I whimper, deciding that I like my hair being played with more than anything else.

“Done,” he whispers, dropping my new braid over my shoulder.

I grin at him, the sexually charged moment flittering away. “You’ve been practicing.”

“I have,” he tells me, looking proud of himself. “Maria demands so many crazy hairstyles these days.”

I admire my tight braid while tapping the two bobby pins that hold the end six times. “This is excellent, Mr. Conti.”

“Ezra,” he corrects, annoyed. “Why is it you have called Pax by his first name since you met but you’re always so formal with me?”

“I don’t work for Pax,” I mutter, sitting back in the seat across from him. “I work for you. It’s appropriate. Besides, I call you Ezra out of work hours when we’re hanging with Maria.”

He changes the subject. “She adores you. You’re all she speaks about these days.”

“I adore her too. She’s the main reason I might never quit this job,” I jest.
