“Thanks, Skylar.”

Zeb walked past me and headed to Michelle’s room. I shut the door and made my way into the kitchen. Glancing at my watch, I still had a few minutes to spare. Might as well grab some water and a few snacks.

I had a feeling it was going to be a long night. I hated Tupperware parties. Or Pimped-Out Chef or whatever the hell it was called. We were in college. Half of us lived in dorm rooms. Why in the hell do we need kitchen stuff?

Opening the refrigerator, I grabbed an apple and a cheese stick. When I turned back around, Zeb was standing in the kitchen.

I screamed and dropped my snacks. “Jesus, Zeb. You scared me again.”

By the look on his face, I instantly knew something wasn’t right. Everything I’d learned in self-defense class was pulsing through my body. It was like a sign was flashing, Warning!

“You’ve got to know, I’ve always liked you, Skylar.”

Panic started to set in as I quickly took in the situation. When I glanced down, I noticed he had nothing in his hands. “Where, um…where are your sweatshirts?”

He looked down at his hands and then back up at me. “I know you want me as much as I want you. I’ve seen the way you look at me.”

Oh God. This isn’t happening to me again.

Fear gripped my throat, and I couldn’t breathe.

Zeb took another step closer to me, but I didn’t move. The last thing I wanted him to see was my fear. Fear was a sign of weakness. Closing my eyes, I blew out a breath and tried to regain my composure.

Snapping my eyes open, I shook my head. Zeb looked at me with a confused expression.

“This is not going to happen to me again, do you hear me? You will not do this to me. Get out of my apartment now, or I will scream bloody murder.”

At first, he seemed taken aback. Then, he laughed. “I love your spit and fire. I can’t wait to see what you feel like.”

I moved slightly to the right as I searched around the kitchen for something to use for defense. Zeb kept talking, but I didn’t hear a word he said. I tuned him out and tried to form a plan in my head. I was never going to let another man take control of my body or me.

Never.

“Skylar, tell me how much you want me.”

My stomach felt sick as I took a deep breath.

Get to the door, Skylar. Now!

“I’d rather chew on nails.”

Zeb threw his head back and laughed. “That’s what I’ve always liked about you, Skylar. You speak what’s on your mind.”

He moved closer, trapping me against the counter. My heart was pounding so loudly in my ears, I could hardly hear myself think. I quickly glanced around, looking for a way out.

Taking another step closer to me, Zeb reached up and tried to touch the side of my face.

Jerking away, I cried out, “Don’t you dare touch me.”

An evil laugh came from his mouth. “What are you going to do, princess? Your precious boyfriend isn’t here to keep me from touching you. And, trust me when I say, I’m going to do a lot more than touch you. Just admit you want it. That’s why Michelle couldn’t go any further with me. She knew how you felt about me.”

Sick bastard is delusional.

Everything I’d learned at self-defense came rushing back. I’d die before I let Zeb do anything to me. It was time for me to take control. “That’s one thing you don’t know about me, Zeb. I don’t need a man to protect me. I can do that all by myself.”

He grabbed my arms, squeezing them so hard that I let out a small yelp. “Is that right?”

Lifting my knee fast and hard, I hit him right in the balls as I said, “Yes, that’s right, asshole!”

Zeb dropped his grip on me and buckled over. Pushing him away, I tried to run to the front door, but he took me by the leg, causing me to fall. Screaming, I started kicking my legs, doing anything I could to keep him away from me and praying like hell someone would hear me cry for help.

“Get off me!”

Dragging me closer to him, Zeb wore an angry expression. “Stop fighting me, damn it!”

I managed to pull one leg free, allowing me to kick him as hard as I could.

Zeb dropped his grip on me, clutching his chest, as he cried out, “Fucking hell!”

Scrambling to my feet, I tripped and fell again, this time landing on my cell phone. I screamed out for help again as I jumped to my feet. The pain in my ankle hit me, almost making me throw up.

“Skylar! Don’t fight this!”

I was almost to the front door when he grabbed my hair and pulled me to a stop. I let out another cry for help. Frantically looking around, I reached for the first thing I could find that would do harm. Turning, I hit Zeb on the side of the head with the vase, watching him fall to the floor.
