“Mom, Mitch is with Beth,” I said while hitting her on the arm over and over again.

My mother’s smile grew bigger. “Aw, that’s nice they came together. Mitch mentioned something about running into Beth and not knowing she went to UT.”

My head snapped as I looked at her. “Huh. Do you think they’re dating?”

Her head turned as she stared me down. “Skylar, I thought you had moved past this.”

I lifted my hands in defense, almost spilling my tea. “I’m not butting in. I haven’t said a word to Michelle about her and Zeb dating. Although I have a strange feeling she isn’t really happy with him.”

“The point is, Michelle has moved on, and it’s only fair for Mitch to do the same if she doesn’t want to work things out.”

I let out a snort. I wasn’t about to say anything to Michelle, but I was kind of pissed at her for not even trying to fix their relationship. Especially when Wyatt had told me that Mitch had come to Waco to talk to her, and she’d turned him away.

“Skylar Woods, you stay out of it.”

I felt Wyatt before he touched me.

“Is she causing problems again, Lynn?”

I peered up at Wyatt and snarled my lip before sticking my tongue out at him.

“Oh, that’s really nice, Sky. Here we are, at our engagement party, and you’re sticking your tongue out at me.”

Smoothing down the side of her hair, my mother took off across the room to say hello to her son and Beth.

Slowly taking in a deep breath, I blew it out. “You and I both know, no matter how much Michelle pretends she is over Mitch and has moved on, this is going to kill her.”

“What is?”

My mouth gaped open. “Do you not see what I see?” I motioned across the room to Mitch and Beth.

Wyatt glanced over to them. When I followed his stare, I watched my brother place his hand on Beth’s lower back, guiding her through the house. That was when I saw Michelle’s eyes following them as well.

“All I see is your brother and Beth. That’s it.”

With a roll of my eyes, I shook my head. “I see my brother and Beth, here…together.”

Wyatt sighed in frustration. “For Pete’s sake, Sky. When will it be okay for Mitch to move on? Or does he have to pine over Michelle for the rest of his life? She doesn’t want to work things out. She pushed him away and made it clear that she was with someone else.”

My blood boiled. I was so angry. “So, what you’re telling me is, if something happened between us, you’d give up?”

His brows furrowed. “Why are you dragging us into this? What’s happening between Mitch and Michelle—or what isn’t happening—is none of our business. It has nothing to do with us.”

I smirked. “Why won’t you answer the question? Are you afraid of what the answer will be?”

“What?”

“When faced with a question that needs to be addressed, you shouldn’t hide from it, Wyatt. Address it head-on.”

He looked away and mumbled a curse word.

“I’m sorry, what was that?”

Snapping his head back at me, Wyatt leaned in closer to me and whispered, “I’m so tired of you throwing your counselor’s shit back on me. I don’t want to argue with you about this, not during our engagement party.”

Throwing my counselor’s shit on him? Did he really just say that?

“Why are you so bothered by my counselor, Wyatt?”

He groaned and pushed his hand through his hair. “You’re picking a fight, Sky, and I have no idea why.”

“I’m not. I simply asked you two questions that you refused to answer.”

Wyatt took me by the elbow and led me through the house. We both smiled and thanked people for coming as we made our way to the back porch where no one was.

Once the door shut, Wyatt slowly shook his head and stared at me. I knew he was frustrated, and I also knew I was picking on him, but I had no idea why. Maybe my frustration with Mitch and Michelle was spilling over onto Wyatt.

“To answer your first question, I would fight for you until I took my last breath, Skylar. Your second question gets a little tricky. If I utter one bad thing about your counselor or your appointments, you accuse me of not supporting you.”

My eyes widened in shock as I replied, “I do not.”

“Yes, you do. So, you know what? Fuck it. You want the truth? Here it is. I don’t like him, Sky. I think, at first, he helped you to get over the demons you had buried deep down. I saw the change in you, and I saw your confidence grow week after week. I was so proud of you, so happy that you were learning to let your fears out and not keep them hidden. But, now, all he seems to want to talk about is you and me. What I don’t do for you. How I’m never there for you. How my football takes away my time with you. I don’t like the guy, and I don’t trust him. If you can’t see past the fact that the asshole has fallen for you, then there is nothing I can say that would matter. In your eyes, he is practically God.”
