Fuck me. It looks like I’m going to have to tuck my tail between my legs and approach my newly mated oldest brother for advice before I screw this up too much more.

I step out of the diner ready to swallow my pride and do whatever it takes to win over my mate.

That resolve lasts for twenty-seven seconds until I glance down Main Street and see the motherfucking sheriff hugging my mate. A red haze drops in front of my eyes as my bear tears at my skin. I lose my goddamn mind.

My roar echoes around the downtown area as I rush over to the soon-to-be-dead asshole who’s pawing my girl. Oh, hell-to-the-fuck no.

“What are you doing?” Cora hisses when I grab Craig Dalton by the shoulder and spin him around. My fist connects with the asshole’s jaw as my mate screeches my name.

“I’m going to kill you for touching my mate,” I roar and punch him two more times as my bear takes over and runs the show.

“She isn’t wearing your mark,” Craig reminds me as he returns my jabs. Bethany and several other people step out of the bakery to watch me and the sheriff brawl, but I ignore them and continue pounding the asshole. I might end up in jail, but I don’t care. This fucker knows better than to touch another bear shifter’s mate, and I plan to show him the error of his ways.

Oh, man, this is getting out of hand. I’m not going to lie; having two gorgeous bear shifters fighting over me is kinda hot, but the thought of Fozzie Bearly ending up in the slammer causes my heart to clench in my chest. I must be losing my mind because these bipolar feelings are starting to feel normal.

“Stop!” I scream, but the two incensed bear shifters ignore me. Darn. I can’t believe Sheriff Dalton’s good deed is going to land Wilder in jail. “It isn’t what you think.” I keep trying while my sister stands beside me, rooting for the sheriff. “I just hugged Craig to thank him for changing our locks!” I shout, but the two bear shifters are completely ignoring me.

Finally, Clay Wilder rushes over and pulls the two men apart. “What the fuck?” He gives his little brother a smack on the side of the head. “Are you trying to end up in jail?”

“He fucking touched my mate,” Wilder roars and shoves his brother back a few feet before turning and advancing on the sheriff again.

“I didn’t know she’s your fucking mate.” Dalton glares at Wilder and wipes a smear of blood from his bottom lip. My eyes widen as I notice the two black eyes the sheriff is sporting. Ouch. “She doesn’t have your fucking mark.”

“I’m going to remedy that.”

Clay pulls the sheriff aside, and the two men talk furiously back and forth for a while before Sheriff Dalton stomps away muttering under his breath. I’m not sure what Clay promised the sheriff, but whatever it was managed to keep his younger brother from spending time in the Honey Pot Hollow jail.

When he gets to his cruiser, Sheriff Dalton turns and smirks at me. “I’ll be back for my reward.”

Clay ends up with a black eye and split lip trying to hold Wilder back as the sheriff drives away.

I can’t believe these freaking shifters.

Bethany leans over to whisper to me, “What reward did you promise him for changing the locks on our building for free and recommending a security firm?”

“I told him we’d give him free honey buns and coffee any time he stops by.” I shake my head. “I didn’t realize I’d start World War Three.”

“Getting to watch that fight was definitely worth a few honey buns and coffee.” My sister smiles. “I’m really starting to love this town.” I’m not sure what changed her mind, but I’ll worry about my sister’s new attitude once I deal with Wilder.

“Are you crazy?” I smack him on the shoulder. I really wanted to hit him on the side of the head like Clay did, but he’s a freaking giant and I can’t reach.

“Yes,” Wilder huffs and steps over to stare down into my eyes. “From the first moment I laid eyes on you, I’ve been insane.” The sincerity shining from his chocolate eyes causes my insides to melt. When he steps closer to me and runs his finger over my collarbone, I almost melt into a pile of goo. “I can’t fight these feelings anymore. Actually, I have no idea why I even tried in the first place, but I do know that you’re my mate and I’ll do whatever it takes to make you mine.”

While my girly parts urge me to forgive him and jump his bones, my fragile heart demands I take things slow. I step away from him and feel the tension in the air around us crackle. “And you expect me to forgive and forget you acting like a jerk?”
