Had he been thinking about her, too? Had he spent these days distracted by thoughts of what it would be like if she wrapped herself around him? She couldn’t fool herself anymore. High school Quaid had been a pale comparison to the gorgeous, smart, kind man in front of her.
He thought he was going to get his heart broken, but she would be the one left aching, and she couldn’t stop herself. She went on her toes and kissed him, pressing her body hard against his.
It had been so long since she’d had strong arms around her, and she was willing to drown in his attention.
Somehow her skirt came off, his hands sliding it over her hips to pool on the floor below. Cool air hit her skin, but she was warm all over, her body tensing in the sweetest way. She watched as he shrugged out of his dress shirt, taking in his muscular chest and broad shoulders.
He tossed his shirt aside and got his hands on her again. He kissed her, making his way from her mouth to her neck, lighting up her skin everywhere he touched her. She felt his fingers twist at her back and then her bra fell away.
“I’ve thought of nothing but this for days. You’ve made it hard for me to think about anything or anyone but you,” he whispered as he kissed his way down her torso. His arms were around her and he lifted her up, his mouth on her breasts. He licked her nipple and then sucked it inside his mouth, sending a flash of heat through her.
She gasped as he nipped her, her fingers clutching at his shoulders.
He moved, never setting her down. She was caught between the sweet cage of his arms and the hot pull of his mouth. Quaid maneuvered his way to the bed and settled her down on the soft comforter.
“Tell me you want me as much as I want you.” The words were a low growl coming out of his mouth, but she sensed the vulnerability behind them.
He needed her. This wasn’t a random hookup, and it wasn’t merely sex. He would try to tie her to this place she’d always wanted out of, this place she’d started to enjoy for the first time in her life. He’d been right. They should take things far slower. “I want you so much.”
Her whole life had been about discipline. She’d had to work twice as hard, be better than everyone around her to get half as far as her counterparts. She had to make herself fit in, make them forget where she’d come from in order to move ahead. She’d sacrificed her personal life, her primal needs, at the altar of proving she wasn’t her mother.
She couldn’t sacrifice him. Not him. Even if this only lasted a few nights, it would be worth the heartache.
Jayna watched as Quaid hurriedly undressed, getting rid of his loafers and socks, his slacks and boxers hitting the floor in record time. He was the gorgeous one, built on athletic lines. The high school football player had been replaced with a man she couldn’t take her eyes off.
He gripped her ankles and dragged her across the bed before dropping to his knees. He eased her panties off and spread her legs wide. She gasped as warm breath caressed her sensitive flesh.
“I told you I’d show you how sweet you are.”
He proceeded to make a feast of her, every stroke of his tongue driving her higher and higher. She fisted her hands around the comforter, holding herself in place for his torture. All of her self-consciousness fell away, and she was left with nothing but pleasure as he managed to send her straight over the edge.
Every muscle tensed and released, satisfaction flowing through her.
This was where she’d needed to be since . . . since forever.
“Jayna?”
She looked up and Quaid stood there, staring down at her like he needed her permission. Always the gentleman. He’d given her everything and still made sure she wanted more.
Now would be the time she could let her fear back in. She could still protect herself. It wasn’t too late.
“Please, Quaid.” She reached out for him.
Protecting her heart was overrated.

With shaking hands, Quaid pulled the condom out of the drawer of the nightstand.
If she’d refused him, he might have died of sheer wanting. She was gorgeous, every inch of her body calling to him. He knew it was a mistake, that she wasn’t ready for what he wanted, but she’d pushed him. He’d realized in that moment that he would take a single night with her if that was all he could have, and damn the consequences. The only thing he couldn’t take was letting her be alone tonight.
She needed him, needed to know how much she was wanted, how much he craved her.
