I would absolutely remind him he said that in about five weeks.

Justice shook my hand, studying me a little more closely than before, but he didn’t comment other than to say goodbye.

My pager started buzzing just as my name came over the loudspeaker, and I glanced at the device. I was being called into an emergency c-section, so I focused on my job and hurried to where I was needed.

Unfortunately, after several situations kept me busy all evening, I was on call in the ER that night. I didn’t have time to stop and take Jenna home before my shift, which put me in a shitty fucking mood.

On my way to change into my scrubs, I sent a text to Linus to make sure he still came for Jenna. I also alerted her security to the situation. Then I sent Jenna a message, letting her know that Linus would be waiting for her when she was done and would walk with her to get her coat from my office before taking her home.

It wasn’t until four in the morning, when I was in the back of my car on the way home, that I realized she’d replied.

Sunshine:

Go kick butt and save lives. See you tomorrow :)

I laughed and thought about how to respond. But anything I wanted to say wouldn’t go over well if someone saw her texts. So I sent a simple message back.

Me:

See you tomorrow.

CHASE

Iglanced at my watch and realized that Jenna was a minute late. While that wouldn’t seem like much to most people, in the five weeks she’d been volunteering at the hospital, she’d never been late. I stood and stalked to the partially open door to my office, then froze when I heard her voice.

“Dani, we both know you aren’t going to let Comden get anywhere with you, so why are you trying to talk me into going to the doctor with you?”

It sounded like she was talking with her sister Dani. If I thought for a second that it was some guy named Danny, I would have lost my shit.

“Why don’t you have Mom go with you?” She paused, then muttered, “I don’t need birth control.”

Damn straight.

“Look, I’m at the hospital. We can talk about this when I get home.” Jenna huffed and snapped, “Stop calling him Dr. Dreamy!”

My lips curled into a cocky smile when I heard the distinct note of jealousy in Jenna’s tone.

“I know he’s sexy, but you shouldn’t be thinking about him like that.”

She listened for a second, then scoffed disbelievingly. “I guarantee he isn’t interested in me.”

How wrong you are, sunshine.

“Birth control isn’t necessary if you aren’t having sex.”

Or when you're making babies.

“Good grief. You are a master at guilt trips, baby sister. Yes, you are. I’m five minutes older.”

I smiled, thinking about how damn cute she was.

“Fine, I’ll go on a double date, but you’ll owe me so freaking huge.”

What the fuck? Over my dead body.

Her voice grew a little louder, indicating that she was coming closer. I quickly returned to the seat behind my desk since I didn’t want her to know I’d been eavesdropping.

Luckily, she didn’t enter for a couple of minutes, giving me a chance to calm the fuck down. If she hadn’t, I probably would have demanded the motherfucker’s name so I could hunt him down and kill him. The only thing that would keep me from putting the little shit in the ground was knowing that if I was caught, I would have to leave Jenna.

“Hi, Chase,” she said as she floated into the room with her sweet smile and pink cheeks.

I blinked a few times to clear away the rest of the red haze of anger, and my expression softened. “Hey, sunshine.”

“Um, can I ask you a very awkward question?” Her skin was flushing to nearly cherry red, and she avoided my gaze.

I raised a brow and chuckled. “You never have to be embarrassed to talk to me about anything, Jenna.”

“Well, it’s just that, um, my sister wants to see a gynecologist. But she doesn’t want to ask my mom because then our dad would find out and lose his mind. I was wondering if you could recommend one…?”

“Jenna.” I said nothing but her name and waited for her to finally meet my gaze. “I’m happy to refer her to someone.” I watched her closely when I asked, “Will the appointment be for you as well?”

“Um…” She watched me with hesitancy as she considered how to answer. “I don’t think I need to take birth control.”

“No, you don’t,” I stated firmly.

At first, I was confused by the disappointment that flashed in her bright blue eyes. Then it hit me. She was fishing to see if she needed to go on the pill because she hoped she’d be having sex soon. With me.

She was partly right, but I couldn’t exactly explain that to her right then. We still had two weeks to go, and I was barely holding myself in check as it was.
