“Yeah.”

I wasn’t sure how I was going to handle all this time apart, seeing her whenever I had the time for a quick flight, to sneak around Leonardo’s men that still tailed her everywhere. I had to get into her apartment before she returned and wait however long it took for her to come back. I was a busy man, and I didn’t have that kind of time.

“Being here with you now…makes me want to give up everything and come back.” Her fingers traced the scruff on my jaw, dragging along the hair to feel the coarseness against her fingertips.

That was exactly what I wanted her to do, but I knew it wasn’t safe. Silas wanted my head removed from my body. The last thing I wanted was for Laura to get in my way.

“I can’t believe I used to live like this…surrounded by all the bullshit. My sister is so brainwashed that I don’t think I can help her. She’ll live a life as a battered woman…or be killed at some point.”

She was making herself suffer even more, forced to spend time with the people she despised, all in the name of revenge. Her anger would fade, and at some point, she might question if the investment was worth the payoff. She’d left her job for this. Left her city for this. Would live apart from me for this.

We lay in silence together, her fingertips continuing to explore my body like she didn’t remember every little detail, every little scar, every place she’d ever kissed me.

“So…what kind of relationship is this?” Her eyes stayed down, unable to look at me as she asked the question.

I waited for her to look at me, because I wouldn’t continue this conversation without her undivided attention.

She finally lifted her gaze.

“I’m your man. You’re my woman. That kind of relationship.”

Her fingertips slid down my neck and over my collarbone. Her espresso-colored eyes dropped to my lips as her nails pressed lightly into my skin absent-mindedly. Seconds passed as she continued her stare, then her plump lips separated slightly, like she wanted to feel my tongue slide through the opening.

It was like one of my fantasies when I was alone in my bedroom. Like one of my daydreams that I envisioned when someone boring spoke to me. I imagined this woman all over me, but now it wasn’t my imagination.

I rolled her onto her back and dove my lips to her tits. Plump. Warm. Firm. I inhaled her scent as I buried my face in the crevasse between them. I kissed her, tasted her, sucked on her nipples until she winced.

Her fingers dug into my wild hair, and she arched her back, pressing her tits harder into me. She offered herself on a platter and begged me to take her.

I pinned her thighs back with my arms, folded her underneath me until she was trapped with no escape, and entered a pussy so slick it made me growl. “Fuck.” I sank until I was fully inside, seeing the way her lips parted as she inhaled a gasp. Her hands gripped my arms, her nails made possessive marks on my skin, and she held on as I fucked her like I hadn’t already had the honor.

She was dressed and ready to go, wearing a pink sundress with wedge heels, a purse over her arm. She looked like a flower in full bloom in the garden, but her eyes showed storm clouds.

Because I was leaving.

Well, she was leaving, and then I would leave afterward.

I was dressed in the clothes I’d arrived in, my mouth clean because I’d used her toothbrush to brush my teeth when I woke up. Her broken heart was visible in her sad eyes, and it was hard to walk out the door knowing the mess I left behind.

“What are you doing for money?”

The question snapped her out of her sadness. “My savings.”

I was surprised it got her this far. “I’ll make a transfer to your account.”

“I just told you I have money.”

But not much of it. “Spend my money instead of yours.”

“But that’s not what I want from you.”

“And what do you want from me?” I would wire the money the second I got into the car, so an argument was pointless, and I knew how much this woman loved to argue. I changed the subject instead.

She faltered momentarily, like she didn’t have a concrete answer. “You…”

I stood in front of her, watching the desire burn in her eyes like a bonfire. “It’s time, sweetheart.”

“No…” She moved into me, her arms securing around my neck, her face coming close to mine. “I just got you back.” Her hand moved to the collar of my shirt and fisted it, wrinkling the delicate cotton, and she tugged me into her for a kiss.

I crushed her in my arms, my hand on her ass underneath the dress. All my lonely nights were spent wanting her and hating her at the same time. Now my chest tightened with more than just desire, because I’d never wanted to leave her less. “I’ll return the first chance I get.”
